  • Nissan's auto-braking system

    Jul 28, 2009 1:33 AM

Nissan has developed a new safety system that pushes the accelerator up if a corner is entered too fast.

The technology, called ‘Navigation-Cooperative Intelligent Pedal’ (NCIP), reads the road ahead using GPS and applies pressure against the driver’s foot if it decides the car is travelling too quickly.

Once the throttle is eased off, NCIP automatically applies the brakes. Nissan claims the system is a world first and believes it “reduces the driver's workload on curvy roads by in...Read the full article

“reduces the driver's workload on curvy roads by integrating navigation, accelerator pedal, powertrain and brakes”

the way nissan says it, it seems they suggest a normal driver can concentrate less on the road ahead of them, doest seem like a good idea if people will lessen their driving workload.

it should be an emergency system only, so lazy drivers dont use it to drive by.

Hmm...  Like GPS speed-limiters and many other systems (such as ESP), this sounds like it'll encourage a lot of drivers to drive around letting the car do the thinking...and then fall off the road because the system doesn't know there's mud/water/black ice on the road, or that there's a tractor/sheep/cyclist in the middle of the road around the bend.   "Of course I was driving safely officer.  I was within the speed limit and within the grip limit...."

This is a safety system too far.  It takes the ultimate control of the car away from the driver and therefore could be potentially more dangerous than a car with out it.

I also have reservations with the technology. It uses GPS tracking to activate the system?  When a sat nav can direct me to the correct place without going wrong then I may have some confidence in it.  Until that time though......

    It's all about the twisties....

By taking the driving experiance away from the driver Nissan has made it more dangerous. Any system that takes over should only kick in in extreme circumsatnces What happens if the GPS is wrong?

I'm sure Nissan know what they are doing. Sounds good! :-)

I will never want a car with this system!
