  • Massa suffers eye injury

    Jul 27, 2009 5:22 PM

Doctors have revealed that Ferrari's Felipe Massa has damage to his left eye - but say it is too early to say whether the injuries will prevent him from racing again.

The Brazilian was struck in the helmet by a spring from a rival's car during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix last Saturday.

Local media quoted the hospital's professor Robert Veres from Budapest as saying that the eye injury could be enough to end Massa's F1 career.

"He has suffered some damage to the e...Read the full article

I sincerely hope Filipe makes a speedy and full recovery, so that he can enjoy soon to be fatherhood.

Still some way to go on the safety front in F1.

I second that. I was never a fan of Felipe until the last race of last season. The way he dealt with defeat showed Hamilton a lesson in being a gentleman.

Hope to see him back in F1 soon.

I guess that's something that can never be entirely solved, given the nature of the sport.

Just hope he's alright, poor chap. Slightly freak accident...

    You're right, freak accident.

There will always be events that you can't legislate for.

I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he makes it back to F1.  He is a genuine character and F1 will miss him sorely if he doesn't make it back.

    It's all about the twisties....

I've been fortunate enough to watch him racing in person twice.   With a clear track in front of him he's one of the quickest drivers there is.   If it weren't for a couple of incidents outside of his control he'd have won the championship last year.   It's one reason why Ferrari have given up on their traffic lights system.   Remember this is the guy who was signed by Ferrari on Michael Schumacher's recommendation as he spotted how fast he is.

I'm sure that I speak for everybody here in wishing him a speedy and full recovery.

That's exactly how I feel about him. When he first joined Ferrari, he seemed to be a bit of a swaggerer, but that last race of 2008 showed him for what he is: a gentleman with a good heart.

In abstract and in history, the morbid risks in Formula One seem to add to the excitement, but when you watch something like that live, where no one really knew if he would survive, it's just a cold, chilling feeling. The danger seems almost romantic until something terrible happens again. Then it's a mostly hollow, upsetting thing to witness.

Some people are saying that Alonso could be given the seat for Valencia since he can't compete for Renault there. That would be very good. What would be amazing would be Schumacher taking it for a spin for a couple of hours - maybe even the rest of the season.

What will happen in reality is probably that Luca Badoer or, more likely, Marc Gene will replace Massa. That's despite the fact that Niki Lauda believes they're both "useless".

So true. Strangely enough not 10 minutes before massa's accident I was thinking to myself how F1 has become so safe that there's rarely a big off these days let alone a serious injury.

The events of the last couple of weeks have been a wake up call for everybody.

What has Niki Lauda got to do with it?

Niki Lauda has no influence within Ferrari, but he has commented, and it's an interesting little aside. Nothing more, nothing less.

I know what you were thinking, and although I'm sure it seemed quite clever at the time, it wasn't worth the bother.

Maybe the way I expressed it triggered the pedant in you because it looked like I was saying Lauda is part of Ferrari Scuderia, but I was only saying that someone who has a worthwhile perspective on F1 thinks the Ferrari test drivers are useless.

This is my theory. Alonso moves across early to Ferrari, Renault get massive payoff. Flav puts Bordais in the car, under duress from the Renault board, who want him because he is French. Renault quietly wthdraw from F1 and become an engine supplier only Or Shummi makes a return for one race, then we'lll see.
