  • Mercedes E-class cabrio spied

    Jul 27, 2009 4:35 PM

Mercedes has been testing the new E-class cabrio against its main rivals, the drop-top BMW 3-series and Lexus IS250C, ahead of its Frankfurt debut.

One trick Mercedes hopes will create a new benchmark in drop-top refinement is a retractable wind deflector atop the E-class’s windscreen.

"New innovation", eh? Since an innovation is something new, is this a new something new? A bit like "Added bonus"  an added something added.

At one time journalists could at least get their own language correct - ah, the good old days.

Middle aged women of the world with fake tans and too much jewellery rejoice!

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.

"Mercedes is also rumoured to be working on a warm air 'scarf' system for both the front and rear passengers."

Considering this is already available on other Mercedes drop tops, I would have said this would pretty much be taken for granted.  Obviously the rear passenger part of the system will be new, but its hardly the world most difficult job to engineer a suitable system.

    It's all about the twisties....

I've noticed other needless doubling up of different words meaning pretty much the same thing (in the context) such as: "return back", "lower down" "reduce down", "increase more", "rise up" "also as well" etc creeping in not just the English laguage spoken on the streets, but believe it or not on the TV news reports too (or should that be: on the TV news reports also as well?).

This thing looks so awkward. It's a shame that in 10-15 years Mercedes' design went all the way from undestated classicism to overdone mess.

Agreed. It looks really odd with no visible header rail above the windscreen and the bent banana styling is just awful, looks like it's been left in the sun too long and melted at both ends. Oh, one last thing, those dreadful wheel-arches at the back, which don't seem too bad on the saloon, look absolutely awful on this.

Unfortunately most of the motoring journalists on most publications are products of the failed education system of the UK which does not see that a good grasp of grammar and spelling is important in the real world of work and commerce, particularly journalism. Autocar is worse than it used to be, but not as bad as some others. Whether this down to bad sub-editing or a mad rush to get every last bit of news out as quickly as possible, I don't know. We need to get the basics right within the education system first, the rest will follow eventually.

You're highly critical of Autocar journalists' grasp of English, but are you sure such generalisation is fair? The committed error is supposed to be the phrase 'new innovation,' but how do rate your own phrase 'bent banana styling' in comparison? Isn't the idea of a banana shape all about being bent? Now, who's 'a product of a failed education system?'
