General Motors is set to sell the first batch of its upcoming Chevrolet Volt petrol-electric hybrids on eBay.

Last week, GM admitted it was in talks with the auction site about trialling a scheme in California to sell its cars online.

When asked about the likelihood of the Volt being used to trial this scheme, Chevrolet brand manager Ed Peper said, “Exactly. We actually have been thinking about that same application to be able to do that. It something that’s definitely crossed our ...Read the full article

As with PayPal's other large merchants such as iTunes, Dell etc, I doubt that very much.

yes but dell and itunes are not on the edge of oblivion. it only takes a social network group or forum to buy all GM cars on ebay and either not pay giving GM millions of ebay fees but no sales.

or it may just be from genuine buyers who are fussy and dont like something about the trim on a car or a tiny fault (which  would normally  get fixed or complained at the dealer etc)  then get paypal charge backs back to their account. within days it could bankrupt the company for good.

As I said to the original eBay article, I think this is a master idea and something I think will really catch on and be a superb success.

Plenty of car places buy cars unseen and insurance companies have underwriters that can value cars; link a budding insurance company with the manufacturer and away you go in terms of the trade ins.

Second you can have sales people that come to you i.e. you can have a caller centre and if you have a little niggle, you arrange with the caller centre and someone comes out to your car, drops you off a loaner and returns your car or fixes on the spot........

Furthermore the over cost is dramatically reduced, the actual service is better as the someone can come to your work etc...thus you would get a much more tailored service at a lower cost.....Long Live King Marketer Bob Lutz!!!...what a great idea.

.....this eBay thing will really work well....you could even have someone come to your house and or the caller centre bring/send you the final views of the car etc....awesome.....a true revolution.....go GM...go King Bob!!.....and a couple of people on here reckoned he was past it.....Rubbish!!...go Bob!!
