  • M cars could get diesels

    Jul 22, 2009 12:11 AM

BMW’s M Division is continuing to work to significantly reduce the carbon emissions of its sports cars, and the sporting arm has not ruled out the use of diesel engines.

Development boss Albert Biermann told Autocar that while it’s still quite a far-off prospect, he can foresee a time when the continued refinement of diesel engine technology will make it suitable to power a fully fledged M car.

Well we already have 'M-Power' SUV's with a Turbo engine and Automatic gearbox....

All BMW need to do now is to whack a great big diesel enigine in the X5/6M and the dilution of the once great M badge will be complete.

Even Audi isnt brave enough to put the RS badge on the Q7 V12 TDi

Md for the MD then? Diesels have had so little development compared to petrol. This has been a long time coming and will upset the trads, however although petrol provides more passion and emotion the new diesels offer some fantastic capabilities - you just need to alter your driving style to get the best. The day the cold start rattle is eliminated will be a huge breakthrough. Shhh no one mention particulates.........

I think this is a great idea plus if you look at all of the Car Companys which one is best for Diesels mmm not a hard question really is it (BMW) and plus i think it would be a good test to see what people think of them including people like my dad who is thinking or ordering a 740d M when he could also go for say a X6 MD :) dont get me wrong i think it could go slightly wrong but i dont think it could go bad as BMW's sales are mostly diesels :) Nice one BMW

I think it is the end of the M brand as what it was.....its diluted....BM basically sold it out and cashed it in and now its like an SE, its not got that exclusiveness to it any, that specialness.

Most of you will know my thoughts....on BM....this is like hocing the family silver and a last ditch effort to sell more cars by trading on the M badge.....thus they sold the badge off and become just another meaningless badge on the back of the car....as said, BM I think will sell Mini (I am now more convinced than ever...could be totally wrong, but I am very convinced they will)....hocing the family silver shows they really are in trouble when you consider how they used to so protect the M badge.

There is no reference to 'hocing' in the Oxford English dictionary. Is it some kind of Norwegian dialect expression you have in your area?

So have BMW made it official and issued a press release yet, just to clarify that M no longer stands for 'Motorsport' and now stands for 'Money' in BMW lexicon?

NO WAY is it the end of the M Brand BMW are just changing there ways slightly and looking at there sales it seems like diesels are doing alot better than petrol why if diesels are doing better would you put all of ur money into the petrol m division huh?

Josh Billings (AKA Henry Wheeler Shaw):

“There are two kinds of fools: those who can't change their opinions and those who won’t.”

Pliny the Elder: “Indeed, what is there that does not appear marvellous when it comes to our knowledge for the first time? How many things, too, are looked upon as quite impossible until they have been actually effected?”

Heraclitus: “There is nothing permanent except change.”
