  • Alfa GTA's future "undecided"

    Jul 21, 2009 12:28 PM

Alfa Romeo is playing down reports that the Mito GTA has been canned, saying no decision has been made on its future.

The car has always officially been a concept and has yet to be earmarked for production, said an Alfa spokesman.

The GTA concept had Fiat's all-new 1.8-litre turbocharged engine, equipped with direct injection and variable valve timing. It produces a hefty 240bhp; th...Read the full article

Gutted...... Hope they do it, doesn't look promising, though, does it? I'll have to settle for the Quadrifoglio Verde, with just 170BHP from the Multi-air 1.4TB.........

"Alfa has reportedly decided against the Mito GTA because of the financial climate"

Hang on, didn't Alfa boast about how wonderful Mito sales had been only earlier this year??

Considering Alfa wanted to aim at the Mini with the Mito, I am surprised that a hot version hasn't been more of a priority.

    It's all about the twisties....

It's all very well saying "Build it!", but are you actually going to buy it?

If they do build it, then hopefully it will be faithful to the spirit of the concept version.  We don't need another repeat of the Brera...

Personally, i would love to see Alfa build it as well, but hopefully they will tweak the stylign a bit so the front end looks a little less like a bird's beak than the concept version.

Alfa sales have been very good....but you have a question on if the people are out there with the money to buy such a motor high volumes.....there people to buy this in sufficient numbers, but as a firm you still have to under write it.

Mini sales have been smashed apart and they have brough out a "cheapo" version which is telling you its tough and the price is an issue; otherwise they would not have done it.

However, READ the article.....its does not say its canned, it says IT BEEN PUT ON HOLD......and there is a big difference; to be honest they do not need to bring it out just yet, Mito sales are hot and the climate is not the for launch.....what do I think?

I think they will bring it out towards the end of 2010 or very early 2011; that makes the most sense...it does three things, firstly gives folks a fast motor, secondly it adds further gloss to the range and second it hits Mini at the other end of the downturn (it will kick Mini really hard as its right in the higher target market)......

.....there is also a fourth thing....it lets the new bigger Milano model enter the market.....it keeps the PR truck running and really keeps the continued launch map running!! I woudl not worry, we will see this car! (I am 100% confident!!)

Alfa sales are up by 30% if my memory is correct , that is in contrast to Renault whose sales have sunk by 71% . The Alfa sales increase is mainly due to the Mito .

Is there any more news as to the Multiair models that are to be released?

I'm gutted that they are canning the GTA!

Was thinking of changing my Blackline for one! :-(

I am sure that they are just postponing it because the Mito sales are very good and there is no need now for a halo model to put the ordinary Mito back in the game. They will anounce it and put it out on the streets when the Mito novelty will run out of steam. One more thing: Would it not be cool if this GTA would really be an alleggerita? Something radical like a Clio cup or even better a Megane R26R. The old 156 GTA (owned one very briefly as an investment) was not a bit sporty and not very fun to drive in the twisties. Also it lost value like it was freefalling. If they make a light version it will greatly boost the image of Alfa as they say Cuore sportivo. In red PLS.

Gti / performance-derivative sales of B+C segment cars are much much smaller than a lot of people imagine. Most manage a few thousand EU-wide. The MINI has to an extent bucked the trend, but most other OEM's face the reality that the VXR's, Clio Sports etc just don't shift enough volume. Why do you think there's no Fiesta ST? The longer-term trend is  to migrate to performance diesels/hybrids....so much as I am gutted by the 'possible' decision, it makes sense for Alfa to concentrate on more volume models.
