  • Jaguar X-Type axed

    Jul 15, 2009 11:56 AM

Jaguar X-Type production will finish at the end of the year.

The Jaguar X-Type is made at the Halewood Plant on Merseyside, and Jaguar is ceasing production early to cut costs.

The X-Type had been scheduled to be built until at least mid-2010.

As a result of the axeing of the X-Type, 300 jobs will be cut at Halewood. A spokesman stressed that the job losses would all be throu...Read the full article

    No surprise.

The X was never as good to drive as the top end Mondeos it was based on

The XF is doing well, with the new XJ set to follow

The X has no place in the line up anymore

Agree with that. It would be nice to see a 21st century X type with a sort of brave styling shown by the XJ. That would surely be a money spinner for Jaguar.

As for the current X type, I always thought it was a good drive let down by it's styling but overall an under rated car.

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.

The X type is past due for the axe but its the wrong part of the market to not be represented in.

What % of BMW sales does the 3 series represent?

With the majority of premium manufacturers down sizing their models, I would have thought the X type (if not this particular one) is a relevant now as it ever has been.

Could have made a good basis for an eco model Jag that would have hit a different sector of the market with relatively little cost.

What are Jaguars future plans?  Is there going to be a replacement in any form?

    It's all about the twisties....

Surely the X type gap could be mopped up by a 1.6 and a 2.0 diesel front wheel drive lowered Freelander and a 2.0 in the XF? Have n't Peugeot got it up to 163bhp in the 3008?

Though they should replace the x type  but that would cost money, and Tata have been known for getting in deals involving compulsory land purchases of peasant farmers, and the way the caste system works in India I don't really know where that leaves for the farmers to go. So guess Tata would be looking for handouts for new models, though there is always the Nano?

The question isn't what % of sales does a car like the X type represent. But what % of profits. JLR will make more money in total from the Range Rover or XJ then they will on the X type.

JLR need the Baby Ranger Rover now to plug the X type gap in production. And maybe a Jaguar SUV to help profit MARGINS.

The X-type is at the end of its natural product lifecyle and new sales are low. It's lasted 10 years now, most cars in that class last 5-7 years before replacement.

I actually have a soft-spot for the Jag. It's comfy, the interior's nice in a slightly old manish type of way. It was a shame being based on a mondeo didn't help the image - although whoever said it didn't drive as well as the Mondeo was right. I went straight from a 2.5 v6 jaguar for 300 miles into a 2.0l Mondeo for the next 300 miles - the Mondeo was a better sorted car and better to drive (always liked the 1.8 and 2.0). Interior comfort was still better in the Jag though.

Interesting that everyone is focussing on the product and what will replace it rather than maybe the more recession based question...

Halewood only makes 2 products: X-Type and Freelander (which was moved from Solihull). What happens to the plant? Are they going to move a line from Castle Brom or Solihull to Halewood. If they don't Halewood is a massive plant not opertaing at full capacity, which would be a shame since it was/is one of the more productive plants in Europe.

Ultimately, is the 300 job losses the start of a greater reduction of the JLR workforce as they look to rationalise plants (3 Plants - 7 products)

Wow, I didn't even know that it was still in production. I though they'd already axed this a few years ago since I haven't seen any newly registered ones on the road.

This a blow, a serious one, for Halewood. I don't know about moving a line from somewhere else though - could it be done? The LRX looks like the conceptual replacement for the X-Type but they should have re-skinned the X (which rides on far more modern chassis than underpins the XF) and got it out fast. The product planning at JLR is a bit strange. Where is the cheaper, smaller Land Rover? Why worry about replacing the XJ? Particularly wioth something that looks like an old Lancia?
