  • New Porsche Boxster spy shots

    Jul 07, 2009 8:13 AM

This is the all-new Porsche Boxster, despite its familiar silouette.

The car is not due to be launched for two years but is already undergoing extensive testing around the Nurburgring.

Please, Porsche, make the 4 cylinder engine a flat-4, not a  VW group engine.

I can guarantee it wont look that different to the current model. They said they changed every panel on the current model to the model before that. The cars look virtually the same. Porsche have the laziest designers ever. ( In Jeremy Clarksons words).

Nice idea?  Yes.  Likely?  No.  This is Brand number 10 for VW now, so dont bet on it not being the same engine as Golf GTi or Scirocco with a naghty exhaust on the back.  Shame as Subarus flat 4 would fit.

New for 2011.  Question is, will anyone notice it is new?  Porsche styling is the pits, and when they try something new (for them) it invariably looks s**t.

All I can say is it's a good job the Boxster handles so well because relying on looks wouldn't bring many sales.

I'd quite like a Boxster S because it is such a great drivers car but its just bloody ugly and because every iteration looks the same there are now gazillions of them on the road. There is no uniqueness or wow factor any longer.

They may say that every panel is new but what they don't say is that they are exactly the same as the old ones! Having said that though, with the disguise on I do detect a bit of Chrysler Crossfire from the rear three quarter view.

What have they done? Changed the grade of steel and canvas?

I'm surprised that no one has spoken of just how much bigger these new cars are. Porsche are lazy using more wheel size more tire and wider everything to make a bull-dozer of a car that can go faster at the ring but slower and less fun on regular roads.

Even tiny Lotus on a 1/30th of the budget know how to make better human sports cars than Porsche.  Maybe eventually they will stop selling so well, due to loyal customers just not wanting to drive them anymore? J

Porsche's styling department may not be the best in the world, but the Boxster/Cayman/911 are decent looking cars. I like the subtle styling on the Boxster/Cayman, but to be honest, I don't care what it looks likes as long as it drives as well as the current model. I drove a Cayman recently, just a base 2.7, but it was simply fantastic. Though the noise was a big part of that - not sure a 4 cylinder will have a sound to match that of the wonderful flat 6.

If they are thinking about sourcing an inline 4 from VW they might as well just stop producing the car, but I think they mean a flat 4. The whole point of the “boxster” is the low cg provided by the mid mounted flat 6 or possible flat 4 boxster engine that make the car handle exceptionally well; toss in an inline 4 and they will ruin the best handling car they manufacture. I’m sure Porsche could patch the design with an inline 4 and make a reasonable good handling car, but why? If they proceed with that blasphemy they might as well call it the “tallster”.
