  • VW Golf BlueMotion spec revealed

    Jul 06, 2009 11:31 AM

VW has launched its “economy range” of Golfs, including a BlueMotion edition.

The VW Golf BlueMotion will be the most efficient Golf in the range, with CO2 emissions of 107g/km and combined fuel economy of 68.9mpg.

Powered by a 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, the BlueMotion has a claimed range of more than 800 miles using a single tank of fuel.

    £17,165 for a 104bhp eco model?

Makes the Prius look like a good deal by comparison.

    It's all about the twisties....

Not really, you end up with a Prius and not a Golf for a start.

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.

These have been listed on the VW site since last month, their is also a 1.6 A3 convertible. They all seem alot of money, I would also look at a Mini Clubman D as an alternative to a 3 door Golf.

There is also a Mini One D 90 bhp out in September but BMW are claiming the same CO2 as the Cooper at a 104, I guess to avoid losing Cooper D sales, though it looks a bit poor next to the larger 207 99g and the Fiesta Eco with the same motor.

There's been lease deals on the Bluemotion Golf SE for, as you say a month now. It's possible to lease the Golf for around £200 a month with the Prius being in the £300 region, or 50% more if you prefer.

Not such good value after all.

Meant to say there is also a 1.6tdi A3 converible, thanks Lee. The A3 c also seems cheaper to lease than a 500c.

I still think it makes more sense to buy the 2.0 TDI version's of the new golf the 110bhp version does around 62mpg and will be much faster to drive in the real world. The only problem is the CO2 difference between the bluemotion model and the non eco models. If you can pay the extra cash i would go for the 20 tdi.

However if you order a golf with factory fitted options it will take forever!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same as it ever was! My dad ordered a Mk2 Golf in 87 with the only option being met. paint and that took 3 months. When my wife ordered her new Ibiza in 02 that took 4 months because the factory closed in August!

VW has always been like that and from what I can gather most others are the same or worse now too.

The 2.0 TDI 110 has been discontinued to allow for the two new 1.6 TDIs and the Bluemotion. I don't really see that the Bluemotion has a huge advantage over the new 1.6 TDI. It would've been more sensible to delay the Bluemotion until the emissions are down to 99 g/km, otherwise people will buy and then realise that their car is out of date! Also surprising to see that the 1.6 diesels don't have 6 gears as standard - I find the extra gear very handy indeed.

I think I would stick with the standard 1.6 diesel rather than the Bluemotion. Whilst the tweaks will no doubt improve economy, I'm not keen on the longer gear ratios.

Also where's the benefit for company car drivers? Providing the standard 1.6 diesel drops below 120g/km (which it almost certainly will) there is little to persuade me to chose a Bluemotion.

Finally, I find myself a little unwhelmed by the economy and emission figures. If a Focus Econetic can manage 65mpg and 115g/km CO2 without longer gear ratios, regenerative braking or a Stop Start system, the Bluemotion doesn't seem to move the game on much, or am I expecting too much? Now thats not to say the Focus is the better car, (despite the fact I drive a standard 1.6 TDCi Focus), but that the Golf isn't as big a step forward as I hoped. Perhaps the 99g/km version will impress me a bit more...

Totally agree. A six speed gearbox would also help make the longer gear ratios less of a compromise. I guess it just comes down to cost.
