  • McLaren plans hybrid supercars

McLaren Automotive has dropped its biggest hint yet that hybrid technology will feature on its future supercars.

The firm is advertising on its website for a senior engineer in powertrain hybrid technology, and the role requires someone to “lead the technical assessment, integration and application of appropriate hybrid powertrain technology.”

A McLaren spokesman wouldn’t confirm whether or not the advert meant it was planning on adding hybrid technology to its road cars, but did c...Read the full article

But seems to me the best hybrid engineers are already working for McLaren and Mercedes Benz. Their KERS system has proven to be the best on the grid so far this season.

Maybe McLaren can recruit Mario Ilien and his team at Ilmor to design something from scratch. Ilien came up with his own KERS system when he designed the F1 Championship-winning Mercedes engines for Mika Hakkinen. The system was banned by the FIA because it would have killed everyone else on the grid.

On the topic of McLaren and Mercedes, are things really that frosty between them? Sure the McMerc SLR was a bit of a missed opportunity. But I mean, neither party is the easiest to work with. Surely they could work together on an expensive and low-volume item such as hybrid together to save each other money.

Agreed.  I am the biggest car guy ever, but does the world really need 4000 extra units of super performance which cannot be used outside a racetrack?

Can we have intelligent, usable performance cars please which you can drive at 8/10ths on the way to work and get a real giggle from everyday?

Head vs. Heart : 2001 Puma or 1999 Celica?

That's 'cos it's a bit of speculative Photoshop work that originally started off as an image of a Gallardo.
