  • Aston Martin Cygnet revealed

    Jun 29, 2009 12:14 PM

Aston Martin has struck a ground-breaking deal with Toyota to launch a £20,000 version of the Japanese-built iQ commuter car, badged Aston Martin Cygnet and built at Aston’s Gaydon works in Warwickshire.

The new model, officially billed as a concept, is expected to be offered for sale before the end of next year. It will initially be sold only to existing Aston Martin owners and those with cars on order, but after an introductory period it will then go on general sale.

    Its April 1st, right?

Aston interiors are average at best for their supercar costs, its all about engine and image (nothing wrong with that). Transpose an average Ford engineered interior into and car with a 1.3 engine and then flog it for 20k, are they having a laugh? What next, a Ferrari smart car?!

Quite like the idea, but I don't think they should have used the Aston Martin name. It could still have small badges 'built by Aston Martin' or something, but this is a little too far removed from what the Aston names stands for, for the badge to be stuck to the bonnet.

Nevertheless, if this is what is required to keep Aston going, and keep producing their GT cars then I'm all for it (I'd still buy the cheaper iQ though!).

I SIMPLY CANNOT BELIEVE THIS! This just proves that Aston knows there are people with more money than sense - primarily, it's own customers. There is simply no basis for charging an extra £10K for a re-designed front grille, new alloys and interior leather. The IQ was already quite expensive but this is bonkers. It's a bloody City Car!!!

It's not a new idea for Aston...although you need to have a few grey hairs to remember the first time :-)   Tickford Metro anyone?

It's a rival for the new mini Rolls Royce. I bet a lot of people buy both and why not? They obviously have money to waste...

this is a woeful idea- and what possible need can there be for a grille that huge, air intakes by the lights and bonnet vents? i can only assume this is an effort to meet the EU's incoming average emmissions legislations.

I take it the dash won't say "Power. Beauty. Soul." when you start it up like other Astons... I think the concept of an ultra-luxurious micro car Is a great one however, I don't think Aston is the company that should be doing it.

It's either utter madness or complete genius, bit like Porsche rebadging a VW 4x4.....
