  • Ex-TVR boss Peter Wheeler dies

    Jun 12, 2009 1:16 PM

Peter Wheeler brought us some of the most dramatic cars ever built, but he was more than a successful car builder and businessman. For my generation he was our Enzo Ferrari, Colin Chapman or Ferrucio Lamborghini; a maverick who did things his own way.

TVR was barely on the radar when Wheeler bought the company in 1980 but pretty soon he turned it around with a range of dramatic cars that looked like no other and had performance to match. They broke down a lot but when they were going they...Read the full article

I never met him. But i did buy one of his cars. It was a tremendous thing, and although i dont have it any more my life is better for having had one. Thankyou Peter.

405 Le Mans, Monaro CV8, S2000, MKX 3.8. No more space.

Colin - What a wonderful obituary. The world is truely a poorer place for the loss of Peter...

This is very sad news. He really was the saviour of TVR and, for a while, the British Sports car industry. I was intrigued to find out what happened to him, as you don't say, and found this on Car's website: Wheeler passed away during the night on Thursday 11 June after a short illness.

R.I.P. I hope that this doesn't mean the end for his RRV.

Very sad news indeed. I had the pleasure of meeting Peter once at a Motor Show - a wonderful character, and a truly fitting obituary, thank you Colin.

Yes very sad news - my thoughts go out to his family. I never met him and have yet to have the pleasure of driving one of his cars although I have longed to own one for long time and hope to one day. Their fantastic looks and sound are his epitaph.

A charismatic man who will be greatly missed - a proper bloke as Colin describes, this a real loss for anyone with an ounce of passion for cars.

     R.I.P Peter

I always have wanted a speed six. Mr. Wheeler is amazing because he went for it, when so many others show a ton of restraint. Nice, big, balls-to-the-wall cars. RIP man. I never met you, but I already miss you.

From the moment I first heard, then saw a 80's V8 wedge as a kid, I wanted a TVR. I have had the enormous pleasure of owning a chimera for the last 10 years....Thank you Peter for this whole experience.

RIP and my condolences to your family.

    That was a wondeful obituary

Thank you Peter for your wonderful contribution to the world. In the main, pleasure and for those recovering from being in the hedge backwards a bit of humble pie.

I still want a Griffith. That fine rear end with two fat unashamed exhausts spouting a deep roar that begins under that smooth toned front.

I remember the story in CAR years ago regarding the styling development of the Chimaera. I do believe Peters dog bit a chunk out of the mould at the front corner. After standing back and looking at it and returning to the mock up the next day Peter decided to keep it and hence you have the position and cut out for the front indicator lenses!

Rest with a full cacophony of that V8 rumble! You won't be forgotten.

Some may say that I now might need to be called drivenonallfoursplease, but most, if not all, won't care.

Just signed up to add my thoughts about one of the most influential British car bosses  who transformed the sports car industry. A great obituary Colin.

I would like to thank Peter for my previous 350SE Wedge (Tasmin) and current 430 Chimaera totalling over 12 years trouble-free 'occasional-use' top-down motoring including a fault-free trip to Le Mans and back in 2005. Just back from the TVR Challenge Cup event at Brands Hatch yesterday where a 1 min. silence was observed before race 1 in recognition of the Great Man.

The Legend Lives On. You will be sadly missed at the circuits.
