Why no drag race? I want to know how the old timer compares in a straight line. I know Frankel says the F40 is quicker but I wouldn't mind seeing what the actual difference is. Other than that the F40 really shows the 'Scud' up as a bit of a minger. Ferrari have really lost their way in terms of styling. Last really good looking ferrari? 355? Surely Frankel as a lifelong ferrari fan you'd have to agree?

Similar prob for me: every time the purple Toyota iQ ad, on right, refreshes, the vid freezes - even with 9.5Mb broadband & a weapons'-grade iMac. Bloody Toyota! Attn autocar.co.uk IT peeps: can't you make your ads clickable so that they can be closed after viewing? Please!!

We have to bear in mind that the F40 was the limited edition super Ferrari of that time and should not be compared to a normal production Ferrari. The F50 and the Enzo are the successors of teh F40; both cars would destroy the F40. Even so, the Scuderia is a lot quicker than the old timer round a circuit and matches it for straight line pace. Oh and the dry weight of the Scuderia is 1250 kilos, not 1400. Still, an object of beauty the F40... beastly and elegant at the same time, a true all-times great.

I'd have loved to do the drag race but one of the Ferraris came with a fairly long list of things we could and could not do with it and I think I'm on fairly firm ground when I say drag racing was definitely off the menu. Last good looking Ferrari? The 355 was the last true beauty for sure, but I have a soft spot for the 599GTB.

Understood. And in fairness if it was my F40 I'd probably not want you doing standing starts in it either. However a little straight line head to head with a Scud, say from 40 mph? I'd be happy to see that, particularly if my old F40 spanked the upstart. As for the F50 thrashing an F40 as suggested above, I'm not sure that's the case at all. Enzo fair enough but the F50 was not to my knowledge much quicker if any at all than the F40. Sadly I wouldn't know having driven neither but I'd be happy to take Mr Frankel's word on the matter. And in terms of production numbers they made over 1000 F40s and it was not limited, they increased production to satisfy the huge demand. I wonder how many Scuderias have been made to date... probably not many more I'll wager... Fabulous, inspiring thing though the F40. I used to think the 288GTO was the most beautiful car ever but having seen one at Brands Hatch recently, it is still gorgeous of course, but the F40 has defied its years better. It's a breathtaking car and the Enzo maybe quicker but it's nowhere near as desirable, to me at least. Here's hoping the CO2 issue will force ferrari to return to leaner, meaner cars like the F40 one day soon.

Just wait for the F450 - see Auto Express rather accurate rendering:

Who said it was the F40 we weren't allowed to flog? The F50 is an interesting case - slower in a straight line due to dramatically inferior power to weight ratio but so much more sophisticated in tyres, brakes and, in particular, chassis and suspension. Round a track I'm sure it would not be troubled by a standard F40. You make a good point about CO2. It may not be a fashionable view, but I believe we're on the verge of a golden era of motoring.

In my opinion, f288 gto is the most beautiful ferrari of all time, if not most beautiful mid engined car of all time. Its a shame it never got to complete in the group B track series against the porker!!

Yes  I agree it was very beautiful, however I doubt that either the Fez or the porker would have gone anywhere with the peugeot 205t16 and the lancia s4 still dominating the races up to the end.
