  • Donington legal threat withdrawn

    Jun 09, 2009 10:50 AM

The long-term future of the British Grand Prix looks secure after Donington Park owners Wheatcroft & Son Ltd withdrew legal action against leaseholder Simon Gillett.

Wheatcroft & Son Ltd started legal proceedings against Gillett’s Donington Ventures Leisure Limited to recover £2.47million in unpaid rent, and the two parties were set to meet in court this week.

Had Gillett lost the case, his lease could have been revoked, ending any chance of the British Grand Prix remaining on next...Read the full article

To have such a trivial hicup so early in the redevelopment of Donington is a major concern.   Reality is that if they're having to be pushed to pay £ 2.7 million, they how will they stump up the other £ 97.3 required to bring it up to GP standard?

We may still not have a British GP next year.

Of course, there may not be a proper grid next year.... Just Williams and Force India and a few GP2, F3 and unheard of teams with old names.....

The problem uis that the contract with Donny was drawn up in better economic times, it'll be watertight in Bernies favour, that's for sure

I can't see how running a GP is a viable proposition for any circuit because all of the revienue goes to Ecclestone. The circuits only get the ticket money and that is not enough to cover costs, and then they have to pay Ecclestone for the rights to hold the race there!

Up until now Governmets in many countries (Not the UK) have made up the shortfall, but with the worldwide economy the way it is, they will be reluctant to pay

I can see that we will loose races and venues because they have been bled dry

Maybe a viable breakaway series is the way to go, back to Silverstone?

I can't see Donnington ever making a profit and we will loose the race

Formula 1 ceased to be racing once pit stops and "strategies" became part of it.   Strategy is for chess: Thank God for motorcycle racing!

Well Silverstone was never going to spend the cash on the necessary improvements, and unless they could somehow turn it into a Bank, then the UK govt is never going to help out. I like Donnington more to drive anyway.
