  • Saab shows new 9-5

    Jun 07, 2009 3:39 PM

Saab will finally unveil the all-new 9-5 at this autumn’s Frankfurt show as part of its drive to become a successful independent car maker.

As well as the 9-5 saloon — shown here in its final production form, and due next spring — Saab engineers are putting the final touches to the 9-5 Sport Combi estate and the 9-4X SUV, which is aimed at the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Both cars are due later in 2010.

Although the new 9-5 shares its Epsilon 2 platform with the Vauxhall Insignia, the Saab...Read the full article

Most Companies talk about 'down-sizing'. However; SAAB emphasises that their future products will be 'right-sized' not downsized. A slight difference in wording but very different in application. According to SAAB's right-sizing philosophy a 1.6 litre engine will produce 240hp or better defined 176KW.

What a travesty! After years in the wilderness, Saab is only now producing some well-styled, decently engineered cars which deserve to do very well. I have owned two Saabs; a 900 Turbo and a 9000i, which were well engineered, very solid and reliable, and the dealer service was personal and friendly. Regrettably, both the 9-3 and 9-5 left me cold, and I deserted the brand. However this, together with the new 9-3X, look very desirable and may get me into a Saab showroom again. I sincerely hope that they survive in the short term and prosper under a new owner in the medium term. If the company became properly Swedish, this would further kindle my interest.

Agree Saab is becoming intersting again after too long a gap.  Strange that the 9-3is being downsized to compete with A3 when it was always a competitor or at least aiming for the A4/3-series?

Does this not create a gap between Saab's 2 models being aimed at A3 and A6 but no volume model vs A4?

It's odd. But from a similar report and 'drawing', from more worthy motor companies have never received such support.

Such a pity that many of our own home brands never received such support in the past, when they were in the same dispondant position.

pretty much every manufacturer buys in a large percentage of its components but it sounds like Saab is planning on making nothing, and just bolting its body onto someone else's engine with someone else platform. There are many problems associated with this in terms of supply being cut off - what happens if GM pulls the use of the platforms? But the chief problem on top of all these ancillary issues is the styling does not actually appear to be different or move the game on enough to attract anything other than the dwindling number of traditional Saab customers - it needs to go out and win conquest business, not just keep what it's got - that's what put it in trouble in the first place.

It's ugly - and it won't look much like this computer-enhanced image either!

Does anyone know where Prince Charles got all those medals he wears?

This looks suspiciously like all those articles about the next new Rovers, the fantastic new Daewoos and the NSUs you'll all be buying next year.

In other words, born of a marketing man's dreams and deluded.....

If SAAB make this that's one less car maker for Jaguar Land Rover to worry about. It's no where near as exciting looking as the XF.
