Opel is set to become a global brand and return to profit by 2011, the boss of prospective owner Magna believes.

The Canadian car parts company plans to revamp the Opel range with “lots of new cars in the pipeline” and target key markets like Russia, Magna co-CEO Siegfried Wolf said.

So once again the British government fails to stand for British workers. Right now they should be threating to block this deal and looking for alternatives. How about talking to Fiat and negotiating a deal for Vauxhall? Fiat seem willing to buy anything right now.....

Vauxhall is just a chrome badge stuck on an Opel, and 2 shortly to be redundant factories  it is useless without the rights to the platforms & engine designs - Fiat would have no use for a factory with nothing to make, and Opel can easily shift production to Germany and stick Vauxhall badges on the cars there.

It's not that easy, it costs a lotta dosh once the tools are there. They are. It's more likely to be the few at Luton who're really gonners. I'd guess that Elmsmere Port might see some "trimming" though. Wouldn't give Antwerpen much chance. Still wouldn't give Bochum much chance in a few years time.

As soon as I saw that Peter Mandelson had become involved in the future of Opel / Vauxhall I started to smell a rat. Now I see that one of the partners in the deal, along with Magna, is Oleg Deripaska, whom Mandelson has had some shady meetings with in the past. Now it seems that, rather then safeguarding jobs at Vauxhall in the UK, production may be shifted to Mr. Deripaska's shiny new factory in Russia. Well done Mr. Mandelson for fighting for the British worker...yet again!
