  • Koenigsegg 'bidding for Saab'

    May 29, 2009 12:38 PM

Supercar maker Koenigsegg is among the remaining bidders for fellow Swedish firm Saab, it has been reported.

The other front-runner for the loss-making manufacturer is understood to be US financier Ira Rennert and his Renco Group.

Fiat is also interested in Saab as part of its strategy to take over GM’s European units.

GM has made it clear that Saab must go by the end of the year and three suitors have been shortlisted, with a deal expected in weeks.

An interesting twist and certainly a company who could make a decent go of making SAAB work.

    It's all about the twisties....

They'd certainly have the capability to bring back some SAAB performance.

I didn't believe it and thought it was just headline grabbing, but it is also in the Swedish press.

But, Koenigsegg have always hovered on the edge of bankruptcy and contrary to popular belief, run a pretty shabby organisation.  Next time you get a chance to look under the skin of one, you will see it isn't such spectacular engineering thrown into it.  The engine and monocoque are spectacular but it stops about there...

It seems a bit implausible in terms of whether Koenigsegg has the financial muscle to make a go of it but they're certainly the right people to preserve/restore the nutty/individualistic/Swedish side of Saab's character - so good luck to them!

Exactly what roadtester said - an appropriately bonkers idea for Saab!  Hope it happens.

It's just what it is- a story!

Keonigsigg as far as i know have no know how to run a relatively large motoring concern, what kind of tech can they bring to Saab that will be affordable?,and from what i read their not always solvent either,no, i don't know the answer for Saab, but i do think that Koenigsigg is not their salvation, like i said a story, a media story if you like,we'll just have to wait, maybe Fiat will buy them now that Magna is buying GM Europe!.

Can't see why Fiat would buy a competitor for Alfa.

What about Scania? Are they in trouble too? They are owned by Saab aren't they?

Certainly the right mentality, I could definitely imagine a KoenigSaab model!

Does the deal give them any access to platforms from Magna or whoever ends up owning GME, or are the patforms still property of GM US?

I do believe that Scania is owned by VAG, and has been for a number of years.

Koenigsegg owning SAAB is the Saabisti's idea of a wet dream. The thought of Renco buying SAAB just scares me half to death. This is the same company that is allegedly poisoning thousands of people in Peru where they have a lead mining facility. Not exactly a good company for SAAB to be associated with, who is building a reputation of sporty, ecologically responsible vehicles (A bit like Koenigsegg with the CCXR.) If the dream was to come true does this mean potentially SAAB could produce an AERO-X styled GT? Or that Koenigsegg launch a Super-charged V8 Luxury 4Dr Coupe based on the 9-5? Many talk about Koenigsegg not having the experience in running a mass production company but ultimately that's what SAAB do. SAAB management have the belief that they can make SAAB a profitable business on their own but without a financial backer/owner they can't can't get the government loan which is an essential boost a new SAAB needs to not only bring the New 9-5 and 9-4x to market but more importantly produce the successor to the current 9-3.
