  • UK car production plunges

    May 22, 2009 12:53 PM

The car industry is pinning its hopes on scrappage being a success after car production in Britain plummeted again.

New data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that the number of cars produced in the UK fell 55.3 per cent in April compared to last year. Production of commercial vehicles such as vans fell even more sharply, by 65.2 per cent.

Despite a new-found confidence following the scrappage scheme, the figures were worse than March, when production...Read the full article

I suspect that until Honda reopens Swindon these figures will continue to be in the Negative.

Many of the cars produced in the UK are exported. Many of the cars bought in the UK are imported. So the UK scrappage scheme will not have a big effect on UK car production. Even if you take into account the European scrappage schemes, the positive effect of these is not going to be massive. We are in a recession after all, so these figures are hardly unexpected.

I wonder how many people are buying Corsa's and Fiesta's thinking they are buying British?

As said before, the main benificeries of the scrappage scheme will be Fiat, Suzuki, the Koreans and similar makers of small, cheap cars.

I heard the Micra is going to India but Honda will start Jazz producation at Swindon later this year which I understand would make the Jazz the cheapest UK-built car on sale? If this is the case, Honda should take the oppuntunty to play on this.
