  • BMW X6 ambulance concept

    May 13, 2009 4:18 PM

BMW has created an X6 adapted for use as an ambulance.

The ambulance, which was built to be displayed at a trade show for rescue and mobility vehicles in Germany this week, is based on the BMW X6 xDrive50i.

It contains all the medical equipment normally found in an ambulance, as well as having side cameras in the bumpers, a rear camera and a variety of flashing blue LEDs to warn other road users of its presence.

It is powered by a 402bhp 4.2-litre V8 that propels the standa...Read the full article

What a pointless exercise!  The X5 is clearly more suited to the roll (especially in diesel form).

What's the problem, BMW having trouble shifting X6's then?!?!?

    It's all about the twisties....

Not sure about using it as an ambulance. It'd make a fine hearse though.

See I was thinking it was BMW's way of showing that there might actually be a point to the X6....
Has the most boring car ever created, but I'm enjoying bangernomics in a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GS in green!

Maybe the flashing lights and stripes are there to distract you from actually seeing the cars styling? I cant think of any other reason for this to exist?

I've seen 2 X6's locally, with the biggest most ridiculous bodykits you have ever seen on them. Just shows you the typical owners levels of taste.

Can't get enough of that Volkswagen and Audi stuff...

I am so pleased that al last someone has found a use for this vehicle. And here was me thinking it was just another blinged up scrap merchants car. I just hope that i never have to travel in the thing. Oh the embarrassment! The best I could hope for would be to die en-route so that my face will be covered when it arrives.

So there you are, seriously ill enough for somebody to call an ambulance for you, possibly staring death in the face, desperate for some much needed medical assistance ... and your ambulance crew turns up in a damn X6. You take one look at it and realise that your impending demise can't some soon enough...

I think some of the comments about the X6's looks are slightly exaggerated. It is not as ugly as most of SsangYong's range, for example. In the flesh it is not actually that bad, to my eyes at least. What I fail to understand though is its purpose. To me it is absolutely useless. If I wanted a sports car I would not start with a 4x4. If I wanted a 4x4 i'd like that can actually go off-road, rather that just take up space and only manage a medium height kerb - which is exactly the problem of the X5, too. In the X5 at least you can carry a family in reasonable comfort and certainly safety, but the X6 can only manage 4 people (with not much headroom in the back anyway) and a small boot for its size. Where is the use for it? It's a rubbish concept and people who buy them are most likely clinically insane with a loose connection running from their eyes to their brain (if you can find one). I think the only thing the hospitals would be able to use this car for is emergency transport of body parts scattered around the country.

It is better than the X6M! Is-it the same M than Motorsport???

I think it's about time someone asked: what is the point of the X6?

Come on, we need to have a debate about this.

The Mercedes R-Type has the hearse market covered for the next 20 years. The 4WD is ideal for getting out of muddy cemeteries. You can't even fit a coffin in the back of an X6 so I don't know how they are going to get a stretcher in there. Unlike the 7 Series, the X6 can't even go straight to the hire car market - small back seat and no room for luggage. We do need to find out who at BMW thought that copying the Ssanyong Actyon was a good idea.
