  • GTA Spano supercar unveiled

    May 01, 2009 10:12 AM

This is the GTA Spano, a new 217mph supercar.

The Spano is powered by a mid-mounted 780bhp 8.3-litre V10 engine and will cost around £500,000. This delivers 679lb ft of torque to the rear wheels through a seven-speed sequential manual gearbox and allows the car to reach 62mph in 2.9 seconds from a stand still. The chassis is made from ultra-light carbonfibre and titanium, giving a kerb weight of just 1400kg.

The entire car, including the engine, has been self-developed by Valenc...Read the full article

Can Autocar do an investigative piece on who actually winds up buying this stuf ??!!

It seems every few months, against a woeful economic back-drop, weird and wonderful engineering start-ups are building another million-euro hyper car. But for whom ?

Are these people that stupid or is there a fascinating world market out there ? Or is it a nationalistic kinda thing ?  The Dutch multi-millionaire can own his Spyker (even though the outfit is now bankrolled by the Russians I understand), the Brits and the Germans are amply catered for by the mainstream as well as the eccentric (ie. Farboud, Gumpert, Saleen), the Italians...well, that's obvious.....So the Spanish get their Aspids and now their Spanos....I've not the foggiest idea, but it would be fascinating to do a retrospective on the last few years of supercar start-ups to see what happened and what poor unsuspecting souls bought the product....C'mon Autocar, what about it ?

Yet another pretty supercar from a relatively unknown manufacturer. Two points spring to mind ....

1/ @ 1400 kgs this is no "lightweight" - maybe their engine design is based on an American truck engine ?

2/ That gearlever seems to have a very long throw, I'm pleased to see the gearbox is sequential otherwise a passenger might lose an eye when selecting seventh !

now I should be called 44 cars so far ... and 21 motorbikes !

It looks like a 50p kit car - a giant piece of plastic with holes punched in it - and the interior is a joke, especially the gearlever!  If they knew it was going to be that long, they should have had an unclothed metal style gear stick, might look a bit less stupid. At least Spykers have amazing bespoke interiors, what is the hook with this monstrosity?

Lots of companies try to produce good cars, some end up being rubbish, some are good but the companies can't make money (Noble) and some go on to do great things (Pagani) - Who knows with this one? will we ever see a road test?

Can't get enough of that Volkswagen and Audi stuff...

Overall, I don't think it looks too bad.  It's impossible from the pictures to gauge the build and overall quality of the car, but it would have to be exceptional to justify the price tag.  The design is clean enough if a little reminiscent of a Lamborghini though.

    It's all about the twisties....

Its derivative and boring!  There's far more design flair in the Megane Coupe.

Less than 100bph per liter from a big v10? Poor.

Looks great! GTA? Does that stand for "Grand Theft Auto" ;-)

8.3-litre V10? I suppose you need your own petrol station for it too! :-)

When you've got each cylinder of 830 cc, it's hard to make an engine rev and make BHP, the only thing you can do is make torque unfortunately. This one makes 82 lb-ft per litre. Makes me wonder if it's lightly supercharged (then again - maybe not).

The 8.3 V10 configuration brings the Viper truck engine (8,380 cc V10 103.0 mm bore, 100.6 mm stroke, 10.2 compression ratio, overhead valve, variable valve timing/camshaft and two valves per cylinder) in mind. Though I think that one is registered as an 8.4 engine.

I always see it as more of an engineering achievement to make your own engine rather than just borrow a big american one. Lets hope it gets a road test here to see if it's any good.
