  • Audi RS5 spied testing

    Apr 28, 2009 5:34 PM

The forthcoming Audi RS5 will use an updated version of the last RS4’s 4.2-litre V8, retuned to give more power with fewer emissions.

The new range-topping Audi RS5 performance coupe, seen here testing today at the Nurburgring, will take the V8’s power up to around 450bhp. The Audi RS5 will use a quattro drivetrain with Audi’s double-clutch S Tronic transmission, the first time an Audi RS product has featured twin-clutch technology.

The RS5 also employs what Audi calls active aerod...Read the full article

Audi progress very quickly. They've only recently brought out the A5, then make a stretch to the S5 and now the RS5 pretty impressive!

Yes but will it be any good?

Audi seem to produce product after product for niches they almost seem to invent.

The S5 is no M3  beater, in fact it was a step back from the RS4, the question is we know it will be well built, look good and have premium pricing but will it be a drivers car like the RS4?, because I don't think high performance Audi's have moved the game on from that car ( excluding R8)...

If the size of those brake discs are anything to go by, this thing will be competing against Porsche for stopping power, let alone a BMW!

But surely the S5 has the better less common looks than the M3. Should you really be comparing it to the M5 anyway. Something you should know - if you think that Audi's high performance cars aren't that brilliant but the RS4 has more BHP than a Porsche 911 - I think- that was said about 6 months ago. But I know that it was some kind of Porsche.

    Autocar:
The forthcoming Audi RS5 will use an updated version of the last RS4’s 4.2-litre V8, retuned to give more power with fewer emissions.

I really can’t see the RS5 having a naturally-aspirated “updated” RS4 motor. The RS4 was rated at 414 bhp and approximately 100bhp per litre. To my mind 450bhp as claimed would be far too peaky and change the nature of the car. The naturally-aspirated BMW M-series always gave c100bhp per litre.

The V8 S5 gave 350bhp. I have one of these, with the 6-speed auto, and it is a fabulous car. It isn’t a competitor to the M3. But the M3 wasn’t on my list anyway.

In my view, anything over the rating of the RS4 motor will require forced-induction. A twin-turbo would seem the most likely way forward. Lower-revving (7k rather than 8K) with more torque than the RS4. This would be a separate development, not an updating of the RS4 motor.

I also would be surprised if the double-clutch S-Tronic gearbox is used. As far as I'm aware, the S-Tronic hasn’t been used with a V8 because of torque limits. I may be wrong, but I would expect an auto box.

different car mags are arguing it will have different engine capacities, and aspirations - we'll just have to wait and see - but these pictures have been around for a long time now.

Of course the price will be higher than £50,000. The old RS4 cost more than this when it was phased out, so its replacement (new RS4) will definately cost more. The RS5 will be even more expensive than the saloon so I would expect prices to start upwards of £55k.

Wow - how bland can Audi make their cars?

Yet, that seems to be what the market wants.

I would agree with Symanski above... I think any A5 variant is and will remain a desirable car, but I cannot believe how dated (and a bit boring) the A5 shape already looks.

I 'd still have one (can one order without the kitsch daytime driving leds?) if it was free, but not at £60k. V difficult to justify big money for cars nowadays (not when you can have Conti GTs fo £29k and Rangies for £12)
