  • The end of the British Grand Prix?

    Apr 23, 2009 3:37 PM

The future of the British Grand Prix was thrown into deep uncertainty today (Thursday) when it emerged that the owners of the circuit were suing the leaseholders for £2.47m in outstanding rent arrears and taking legal action to have the lease forfeited.

Wheatcroft & Son, the owners of Donington Park where the British Grand Prix is due to be held from 2010, yesterday started an action in Derby County Court to secure the outstanding payments and have the lease forfeited.

In January 2...Read the full article

There's only one place for the British Grand Prix - and I'm sure we all know where that is!

Silverstone's a dump and its owners refuse to spend any cash on improving it, plus Donnington is the more interesting circuit to drive by far - especially good on a bike!

Can't get enough of that Volkswagen and Audi stuff...

It's a shame really, because F1 is pretty big in England, and to not have the cars on an English track is disappointing. I thought that going to watch a grand pirx live at the track would be pointless you would see 20 cars and then you have to wait another minute before they are back again, but I really considered going to the English one next year, not this year I have plans! But you have to sue, who you have to sue. Because if you win your case = £££££££££££ They have Silverstone but thats a dump I totally agree with Auditastic!

Someone with the amount of money that Bernie has could easily make sure that a GP takes place in the UK - even if it meant spending some of his own money...shame that a British born citizen is not proud enough to support his own country hosting an event - and an event in a sport on which his income is based upon!

    Good one!

Never been to Silverstone, nor Donington, but I have to Spain and Italy for their GPs.   Italy was amazing, watched Vettel win with a flawless drive in the most difficult conditions which the likes of Alonso couldn't drive in.

As for the British GP, I always wanted it to go to Brands Hatch.   Personally I think the racing would look and be better there.

Brands won't get the Grand Prix again because of lack of space to expand into for runoff/grandstands and noise restrictions. Silverstone won't as long as Bernie's alive (which says it all really), so Donington really is make or break for the Grand Prix. I can only hope they will find a way to settle the dispute rather than go to court, because I would hate to see the Grand Prix go down the pan (as TegTypeR demonstrated quite well!) simply because of a money dispute. Times are tough, yes, but Mr Wheatcroft is not short of a few if the last reports were anything to go by.

Here's hoping common sense wins through from both sides.

I'm afraid not, much as it would be fun to carry the illusion for a while! Mind you, considering his recent escapades I'm not sure that's as good an idea anymore...It's just a funny coincidence, although it surprised the heck of out me when I found out about 10 years ago.
