Ford, Toyota and Volvo have all signalled their intention to sign up to the government's scrappage scheme, joining Citroen and Hyundai in confirming their participation.

Under the terms of the deal every manufacturer must put up half the £2000 new car discount and apply it to every model in its range.

Once one company does it, they all jump on the bandwagon but in this case I don't think thats such a bad thing. :D

I agree - I think most will sign up, but how many will ask their dealers to contribute money towards the £1000 manufacturer contribution, and will this reduce dealer margins & discounts that should be over and above the scrappage money?

'Ford's announcement is significant, as it is the UK's top-selling car maker'

I thought that nowadays all Fords were imported ?

They are, you just have to break down the sentence to see the real meaning.  Ford are a car maker and their brand is the UK's top selling!

Engines, design and some engineering is still done in the UK, although final assembly isn't.  We just have to take small comfort in the little input we do have.

    It's all about the twisties....

"The old vehicle being scrapped must be a passenger car or small van up to 3.5 tonnes, registered in the UK on or before 31 July 1999, currently registered with the DVLA to a UK-domiciled registered keeper making the application or on a SORN notice, have a current MOT test certificate, and have been continuously registered to the owner for the 12 months precedeing the purchase."

So if i have a car on SORN not MOT'd or taxed or insured, will it be eligible?

It was only a few weeks ago that Ford put a range wide price increase on - and now they actively say they are offering discounts on most models. Clever. Price up, then offer it "on a special"....wonder what Trading Standards have to say on that one..bet they would shoot Tesco et al if they tried it!

    To drive is to live.

    Autocar:
Ford's announcement is significant, as it is the UK's top-selling car maker. It has also said it will offer further discounts across its large car range, on top of the £2000, ranging from £1250 for a Ford Fusion, £2500 for a Mondeo through to £3000 for a Galaxy. This scheme will be called 'Scrappage Plus'.
How kind. Of course this is the same Ford who increased prices by 4.5% in February and another 3.75% at the start of April, issuing a press release which put the blame entirely on the weakening £ against €. So they can afford these offers how exactly? (For example, this is a £3000 discount on a Galaxy which went up £1100 in February and £895 in April.) And isn't the current President of the SMMT (which I understand was heavily consulted in the development of the scrappage scheme) the Chairman of Ford of Europe? I call shenanigans.

Teg, Not quite true. Don't forget that Southampton still produce Transit.  You have to remember that the factories produced here in the UK power most of the Ford range in Europe; actually make that 100% for diesels. They also sell to other brands.

Next time I pop into the shop, remind me to set you straight :O) Now, try and figure out who I am... LOL

Sorry, but can someone please explain to me the advantages of scrappage, over nearly-new? Next year, I’m considering replacing my 12 year-old (bombproof) Primera, which presumably makes me just the sort of buyer the government is targeting with this scheme. One possibility is to go to the likes of Motorpoint where I can have a Bravo 1.9 Multijet Active, with 15,000 miles on the clock, for £6,699. The list price for the same model, brand new, is £14,250 – assuming a generous discount from my Fiat dealer, less my £2,000 for scrappage, I still reckon I’m a few thousand pounds better off with the nearly-new option. The headline offer of £2,000 towards a new car looks appealing, but for people like me, in need of a family car at an affordable price, it just doesn’t make proper economic sense.

If it's being scrapped, why does it need an MOT?

I think what this shows is that it's really a one grand scrappage incentive and the other thousand is just going to come from the discounts that the manufacturers would be offering in today's weak market anyway.
