  • Porsche 928 set to return

    Apr 22, 2009 7:41 AM

Porsche is preparing to build a sophisticated luxury super-coupé in the spirit of the old 928 — but only if it sees an end to a global downturn in sales.

One senior company source has admitted to Autocar that the large three-door would be a "very nice" addition to the Porsche line-up. But he also insisted that the car is still some way from board level approval.

Discover how Porsche will make a 928 from the P...Read the full article

It's only a picture but if Porsche have any plans to make something that looks like this, then it could be a real winner.

It certainly makes sense for Porsche to spin something else off this platform from an economic point of view, however, they really should look at repositioning the 911 in the general Porsche hierarchy.

It's clear Porsche's engineers can produce a far better car than the parameters of the 911 allow them.  Yes the 911 is iconic and by all means keep it in the range but lets see what they can really produce if they're allowed to.

    It's all about the twisties....

    Really???

It's just a cut down Panamera, which currently is the most unresolved design porsche have as yet come up with, even the Cayenne is better proportioned and that's a seriously ugly beast.

Used to love the 928. It was my favourite Porsche with that muscular V8 and modern cabin (for its time) and much preferred it to the old bug-eye 911.

I joked recently that Porsche could launch a derivative of the Panamera with a chopped chassis, +2 rear seats and a more sloping fastback, and call it the new 928... I didn't realise this was being seriously considered!

It seems such an obvious move to make - it would cost more than the Cayman to develop, but still a relatively cheap way to bring a new model to market.

One other reason they may not do this is to avoid eating into Panamera sales... I suspect some will buy the Panamera because they love the idea of a GT Porsche, not because they need 4 big seats.

A new 2-door Porsche coupe based on the Panamera would be easy to engineer and could easily be made much more visually attractive by virtue of only needing to be a 2+2 instead of a full 4-seater. All this guff about the Panamera being expensive to engineer etc etc. is nonsense. The chassis was developed by VW for Porsche and will be used for big Audis, Bentleys, and the next Phaeton, providing admirable economies of scale. It's why porsche and Vw have merged.

They need to dump the Czechoslovakian designed 911 and give the Cayman the power it deserves. Dump the idiotic Panamera and build the 928 which is what they should have done in the first place. Porsche is a sports car company and that is what they should remain. Leave the fence straddling to Audi and BMW.

Great plan Jackflash, except for the fact that lots of people still like the 911, it's profitable, and is one of the most distinctive and most instantly recognisable cars on the road (thus enhancing Porsche's profile and reputation in a ruthlessly competitive world).

    As I say, great plan.

It looks a bit like the Ferrari 599. And the looks on the Porsche series I haven't really like and as Clarkson says `it looks like a squashed up VW Beetle`he can't say that about this car though, a good improvement.

It would be, I agree. But it sounds great now but when the official statistics come out It might be let down. But it's most likely to be even more impressive.

I believe the Porsche hierarchy should be:

928- Three door coupe based on Panamera with a 5.0 litre V8/V10 engine

Cayman- WITH the power it deserves. It is definitely a better car than the 911 and if Porsche were to choose to realise its true potential, it would eventually rise above the 911

911- An iconic car, true. But there is only so far you can develop a design that is conceptually flawed and decades old. They have tried to iron out the flaws over the years, true and sure, one can be obstinate and choose to make pigs fly if one is so inclined, but a flying pig is no Concorde.

The commercial models, the Cayenne and the Panamera do not really matter and should be considered as necessary only to provide funds to develop the sports cars...
