  • British WRC round under threat

    Wales Rally GB, Britain's round of the World Rally Championship, is under threat.

    The rally's long-time backer, the Welsh Assembly Government, has withdrawn funding for this year's event, which is due to be held in late October.

    This is despite the Welsh Assembly announcing a five-year deal to back the event from 2007 to 2011.

    As a result, International Motor Sports, which organises the rally, has begun legal proceedings against the Welsh Assembly for breach of contract.

    This is bad news, and if there's a contract in place all that will happen is the Welsh government will end up not only having to foot the bill for the rally but all the lost sponsorship that was done on top of this too.   I'm sure there's already people who have booked holidays in Wales to follow the rally.

    WRC I personally think is in a crisis at the moment.   TV coverage is poor, although I think the program on Dave is superb it's just not a mainstream channel.   Plus the lack of big teams such as Subaru and Mitsubishi.   I'm not in a position to say what the organisers should do, but certainly it does need to raise it's profile somewhat.
