Subaru has revealed the production version of its new Subaru Legacy saloon ahead of the car’s launch at next week’s New York motor show.

The production-ready model follows the concept shown at the Detroit motor show in January and it is set to go on sale in the UK in September.

A naturally aspirated 2.5-litre flat four producing 170bhp and a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat six engine producing 256bhp will be available for the US market, alongside a turbocharged boxer flat four, ...Read the full article

Why did they bother? The old one was a far nicer looking car with its slim pillars.

Merc CLS / BMW 7 series done by a blind man.

Japs intent on self-destruction; GM/Chrysler kaput; Europe fill your boots.

I think the CLS is one of those things people either love or hate.....me I genuinely love it!...I am going to get one...I genuniely think they are beautiful!!

GM/Chrysler are getting Gov. money....they have a fantastic future!.....

But EU firms should be filling in the gap Subaru have with some good looking mid size, keen to mid priced 4x4 cars.....Subaru have lost the plot with this....the new scooby was minging also!

This car is heroically bland and ugly. What a shame.

In my opinion, the styling of the current Legacy is very well proportioned and makes for a very smart car overall. In contrast, this new one looks ungainly and lacking in cohesion.

Worryingly, I fail to see how this new model moves things on. The article talks about 'sharper ride and handling' which you expect from a new model anyway, but where are the exciting new technical features or the 'eco' improvments?

Subaru's future in the UK looks quite doubtful if they keep turning out stuff like this.

    It's not that bad!

I will agree, it as lost the elegance of the previous generation car, and the overall effect is a bit too Lexus for my tastes, but it is far from a bad looking car.  Certainly a better effort than the Impreza.

    It's all about the twisties....

do you bulk buy at Specsavers? It's appalling. Just look at the wheelarches, the rears particularly. Whole thing looks like a jelly mould with comedy wheelarches, most reminiscent of a Jap-market only Toyota Crown type thing from the 70s/80s. The Japs have lost it, if they ever had 'it'. First Toyota's increasingly offensive latter designs, then Honda's harakiri with the Civic now Subaru with this, and not forgetting the joke concept thing by Nissan at Geneva - Qazana? The Japs have different aesthetics and boy is it now showing!

I'll keep this short and simple, its absolutely hideous looking, the concept version looked bad enough but this is the final straw altogether. Anyone that actually buys this has either a great sense of humour or needs an urgent visit to an optometrist at a local Specsavers.

The interior is nice and that's about it.  The exterior looks like a cut'n'shut Vauxhall Insignia/Lexus GS monstrosity...the front end design is the automotive equivalent of erectile dysfunction.

I'm surprised they didn't just mildy re-clad the existing model, like with the new Golf.  I think a lot more manufacturers could do that because there are plenty of great current generation cars that aren't desperately crying out for 100% new replacements, the Golf being an obvious example, the Focus another.  All the old one needed was some mild engine tweaking - maybe BMW style eco credentials combined with a few extra bhp - together with an interior revamp and a mild rejigging of the exterior.

My parents have got an '05 Legacy Spec.B saloon. Don't think I'll need to persuade them to keep it rather than getting a new one - I'll just show them the pictures of this one and watch their faces turn green with the urge to be sick...

On a slightly more serious note, Subaru "design" is now beyond a joke - I was one of the 3 people worldwide who didn't think the new Impreza was that bad... STi in particular. But this is just horrid.

Wonder if Steve Mattin fancies a challenge now he's left Volvo....
