  • McLaren F1 set to return

    Apr 01, 2009 10:00 AM

McLaren is planning to claw its way back to the very top of the supercar ranks with an extended range of high-performance models, including a hi-tech successor to the legendary F1.

Details of the plans have been outlined to Autocar by a high-ranking official with intimate knowledge of the company’s secret business plan.

Under the direct guidance of McLaren CEO Ron Dennis, who has given up the daily running of the firm’s F1 activities to concentrate on its road car operations, McLar...Read the full article

When I first read it, I wondered at all if there was even going to be an engine in it.  I thought a 200mph+ electric car with the possibility of a downsized range extender fitted in there.  But maybe that's just a bit pie-in-the-sky from me

Surely Autocar has glossed over the real news in this story.

Previously, Autocar has reported that the P11 assembly would be subcontracted to either Magna in Austria or Lotus.

This article makes it clear that there will be "a complete range of cutting-edge supercars designed, engineered and produced in the UK".

So that reduces the short list from 2 to 1 then!!!!!!!!!!

For the benefit of everyone who thinks that this is an April Fool, this story actually originates from 31st March on Autoweek website (& with same illustration!!)

Whilst I doubt if a true F1 successor will ever make it to production, McLaren's roadcar expansion plans are very real.

I think this might be a genuine one.

Check out the link provided by RacingPuma (although the article IS dated 01/04/09). They have an April Fools photo section with gems such as the Hyundai i10 Popemobile and a Kia Soul with reverse thrusters and front air scoop!!!

Autoweek have updated their page.  I can assure you that the original version had "last updated" date of 31 March

Note the current "last updated" date/time is "04/01/09, 16:10 et " which is several hours after my post at 2.27pm UK time.  I am not a time traveller.
