  • New Mercedes E63 AMG unveiled

    Mar 31, 2009 4:23 PM

Mercedes has taken the wraps off the new range-topping E-class: the E63 AMG.

Despite talk from within AMG about ending the horsepower war between German car makers, this new model has more power than the car it replaces — although at 11bhp, it’s a modest gain.

But thanks to a number of efficiency-enhancing measures, the 518bhp Mercedes E63 AMG drinks 12 per cent less fuel than its predecessor. It now returns 22.4mpg.

The 6208cc V8 produces the same power and 465lb ft of torq...Read the full article

Having just returned from a vehicle release at a secret location for the E-Class estate, Cabrio and E63 AMG, i can confirm that this car is absolutely phenominal in comparison to it's predecessor.

The Saloon itself is a generation above anything before in terms of technologies; Having experienced the Active Lane Assist, Speed Limit Assist and Active Park Assist first hand, one finds it hard to comprehend how this technology operates so efficiently with so many parameters to consider. It's mind blowing!

Also the fact that the new engine falls into the lower tax bracket makes it much more appealing to business users who wish to have that desired brand image, and be cost effective at the same time.

Just wait for the Estate, Cabrio and 63 AMG they're a real treat, you're gonna love it!!!

Love it!   If the estate is as good as an artists impression I saw a few days ago, it's on my list for 2 years time!

The tech stuff sounds good but as the car on which it is based is butt ugly even those fat exhausts and wheels can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear...

Brute force with no delicacy again from Mercedes.

Plus, isn't it a bit out of step with the way everyone is feeling right now? I am not a massive subscriber to the 'recessionists' but surely this thing is a touch obscene.

Maybe it is a bit OTT for the current climate, but we all need something a bit more interesting to liven up the doom and gloom. The E63 won't sell in huge numbers, but whilst I am not keen on the new E class, I quite like the comparative simplicity of the AMG series against the M cars. Whilst I have never driven one and probably never will sadly, I know the simple point and shoot power would always leave me with a grin on my face. The AMG cars seem to have little soul that perhaps the M cars lack.

While the new E63 may be a technical tour de force it still looks so ugly that you have to really be a Mercedes fanatic to want one.  I know that AMG can only do so much with such a challenging design and I certainly applaud them for their effort.  At least now the car can run more quickly for cover.

    Will you lot give over.

    Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG

What should be more concerning to British readers is the price of this thing. If it comes in around the 80,000 euros mark(C 63 AMG €68K) it'll make the 90,000 euro Jag XFR look way overpriced. The Merc is quicker, more powerful and has a handbuilt engine and 7 speed gearbox.

Thanks for the pic Horse and Cart.

Yup, still just as ugly.  Plus, if it was just about cash we'd all buy a Chevrolet Matiz.

should be a way better all rounder than RS6 and M5 and on par if not better than XFR

In your opinion.   Personally I like it and when in a couple of years time it's price has hurtled downward like a block of concrete from a 10th storey balcony, I'll buy one, and revel in the engineering excellence.
