  • Audi A2 supermini is reborn

    Mar 24, 2009 11:34 AM

The plan to launch a successor to the Audi A2 has reached the concept car stage, with a design for the car being shown inside Audi’s Ingolstadt HQ, according to the firm’s R&D chief, Michael ***.

The new car will “be recognisable as an A2 but very different from the old car”, said ***. However, the Audi A2 will not be launched this year.

Audi wants to release an electric A2 at the same time as the conventionally powered model, so the car’s design and engineering is taking longer ...Read the full article

Will it be aluminium? I don't understand why Audi don't dust off the tooling for the A2 and relaunch it. 10 years on it still looks very futuristic, is light weight, and has a sealed bonnet / front service hatch / dual floor system that would be perfect for housing the electrical gubbins for an all electric car.

Ironically, Audi could save their development costs and re-launch the original A2, as it is probably more fitting to todays market than it ever was when it was launched.

    It's all about the twisties....

i would love the original aluminium A2 to come out again, but with an option of a sports version aswell as the eco engines.  The thick A pillar would need a bit of work as the front visibility is not too good.

as for the new audi A2 i wouldnt be interested UNLESS it weighs less than the original A2.

so they need to have a target of around the 850kgs mark if they really do have the philosphy of   ‘Vorsprung durch technik’. If they cant achieve that then their philosophy is a 'piece of s***'.

Their only get out would be to have the A1 as the true A2 replacement and have that as the lowest mass model, and a benchmark for other manufacturers.

There's clearly a demand - used A2 prices are very strong.

The last A2 was a masterclass of design, miles ahead of its time and supremely perky with all the engines due to the alu construction, only thing negative I remember about it was the whole car shaking when that HUGE front wiper was working.

Great car that should be launched again!

Good that they're bringing the A2 back...but I'm afraid it's a bit of a "meh" from me. Given current car trends it was merely a matter of time, I'd have thought.

I bought one 4 years ago and apart from some shocking service bills from Audi, I have loved it. It's seven years old now, but you wouldn't think it to look at. The previous owner had fitted most of the extras that were possible so it is a very comfortable machine. By comparison my mother in laws VW Polo which is the same age feels like a tin can when I get into it.

It costs less than €30 to fill it with diesel from empty and does everything that is comfortable in the city or on the motorway. I agree with jaydub about that wiper though!

Audi should have learnt from Peugeot: BIG grill do not work on SMALL car.

The new 'A2' is to the original A2 what the new Twingo is to the original and the new Ka to the original etc. There should be a law against abusing great cars' names.

This does rather go against the statement not long ago by Audi saying they weren't interested in developing hybrid or electric cars and fuel efficient diesels were the way forwards.
