  • Jaguar's bolder, sharper XJ

    Mar 18, 2009 12:47 AM

The radical new Jaguar XJ will be revealed in London this July ahead of its launch later this year, and Jaguar wants to reclaim some of its traditional executive customers with the car.

Once the natural and patriotic choice for board directors everywhere in corporate Britain, the XJ has been replaced as the vehicle of choice by the Mercedes S-class. But with fresh styling, lightweight alloy construction, and new engines, the new XJ is designed to open up a new customer base.

Will the headlights on the production model be enlarged to the point of being ugly, as they were on the XF?

I'm not sure where to start with this over sensationalised piece of rubbish, but lets have a go anyway.

    Autocar:

The radical new Jaguar XJ will is likely to be revealed in London this July ahead of its launch later this year, concept form at the Frankfurt motorshow in September, with the real thing appearing in January in Detroit, mirroring the launches of the XK and XF over the last  years. Jaguar wants to reclaim some of its traditional executive customers with the car. branch out into the rapidly expanding 4 door coupe market and move away from the retro styling, which may alienate some traditional XJ customers.

Once the natural and patriotic choice for board directors everywhere in corporate Britain, the XJ has been replaced as the vehicle of choice by the Mercedes S-class.  Jaguar currently has a good percentage of the UK premium saloon segment with the XJ but is looking to expand into territory held by the new Maserati. But with fresh styling, lightweight alloy construction, and new engines, the new XJ is designed to open up a new customer base. (this last sentence contradicts previous original paragraph)

Project X351, as the car is called, started as a reskin of the current XJ. But as the programme has developed, the engineering changes have become more extensive.

In fact, X351 will be the first Jaguar flagship to be launched with a retooled body and new engines. Traditionally Jaguar does what most other car makers do, and launches carry-over engines in a new body to keep costs down. Jaguar will launch the new car with the engines already seen over the last few months in the rest of the Jaguar range, as it ceases production of the current XJ in April and has decided not to fit these engines to the current model.

Much of the structure is also new; the rear structure has been changed to accommodate the XK's differential, which requires a new subframe and new mounts.

The lessons learned in the reskin and repackaging of the S-type into the XF are being applied to the XJ. For example, Jaguar started out with a coupe-like rear cabin, with a low back seat for a shallowly-raked rear window.

But the design has matured into a more practical shape, determined by the requirement to make the rear cabin as comfortable as possible for chauffeur-driven businessmen. Jaguar will have considered the requirements of such a car from day one and while rear seats will not be an outright priority the everyday needs will ensure the coupe like roofline will not compromise rear space.

Styling is inspired by the XF, but well placed sources say that we should expect a much more dramatic and eye-catching look. 'People know that there’s new car coming, but they won't be prepared for anything like this,' said one source involved in the project.

The interior, too, is described as a 'big step forward'. Although features such as the XF's rotary gear selector are carried over, and the basic theme involves plenty of glossy wood and metallic trim, the new XJ takes the design to new levels of craftsmanship and quality. 'We knew we had to work on this,' said another project insider. my imaginary friend Bob the obvious semi-literate mono-syllabic troll.

The flagship of the range will be the XJR, powered by the new 503bhp direct-injection 5.0-litre V8. With that amount of shove to launch a sub-1700kg saloon, the XJR is taking a major step into Bentley and AMG territory, while retaining Jaguar’s legendary balance of ride and handling.

The most critical engine is the new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 diesel, with 271bhp on tap. Fuel economy ought to be close to the XF's; estimates put it at around 40mpg. better than the XF at around 42-44 mpg as the all aluminium construction will make the car considerably lighter. The car will also get the lower-powered version of the same oil-burner, with 237bhp.

The V6's peak power and torque figures are very close to the V8 TDI which appears in the Range Rover. Jaguar is therefore not likely to engineer the XJ to take the V8 unit. Jaguar is exploring the options of the larger 3.6 V8, possibly expanded to 4.0 litres as sales of 4 litre + V8 diesels are strong in other European countries such as Germany, but development times and cost are likely to mean even if it is introduced, this engine will not available from launch.

PS sack the rendering company. The car will not look this flabby, and a 55 plate registration number? will Jaguar be launching a 4 yr old car?

I know Autocar likes to be patriotic, and Jaguar is doing good work at the moment, but this piece really wasn't good. Sorry.

Looks a lot like the Porsche Panamera....................

I never liked the prominent squarish grille.

Is incorrect. The new XJ will be launched this summer in production form. Production of customer vehicles starts late summer. By the time the Detroit show comes along, vehicles will already be in the hands of customers.

Does this mean the new car wont be competing with the S class/7 series. Also what will happen with the Daimler brand, is it going to be scrapped.

Intriguing. A Jaguar man sufficiently incensed by Orangewheels comments that he feels the need to join the forums. Must be quite senior too in order to make such bold statements re launches. Either that or he is PR sanctioned. Welcome to the forums WhitleyBloke. And by the way, I'm not a big fan of luxobarges, but this one looks very good, and has at least taken a step in the right direction with its Al construction. Should make quite an impression on the road. Well done to all at Jaguar.

Needs a Daimler version - never understood why they seem to be letting this brand die off slowly. There again I do have a Double-Six so maybe I'm biased ; )

That is exactly the first thought i had.

The vents in the front wings are excessive too, but it looks great otherwise.

405 Le Mans, Monaro CV8, S2000, MKX 3.8. No more space.

I don't think the fastback will work in the market it is aimed at. If it did Mercedes wouldn't have built the S-class and just gone with the CLS.

What is it with those vents anyway Is this Callums signature. I think they look stupid on a car of this calibre

It'll be nice to see it early then, but would you mind actually telling your own dealers that?

After seaking to a few Jaguar Dealer Principals they aren't expecting to see the car this year - I'm sure they could do with the good news!
