  • Audi TT RS: pics, info and the noise

    Feb 20, 2009 6:00 PM

These are the first teaser images of Audi's new TT RS, the model that will reunite the German brand with the five-cylinder turbocharged engine format made famous by its original 1980s Quattro.

The range-topping TT is fitted with a new 2.5-litre powerplant that uses the architecture of the firm’s V10 motor. A single turbocharger helps to create around 340bhp and 330lb ft of torque, and the engine uses direct injection to improve fuel efficiency.

Sounds nice, but just a tad too muted..... a little too refined possibly?

By extrapolation, 5.0 V10, Twin Turbo, 680 BHP and 660 lb-ft of torque. In a Gallardo LP680/2 maybe?

Very much like the look of this TT... and the sound...

I rather like the latest TT in any guise (completely the opposite of my view of the original) - and it looks so much better on the road than it ever does in pictures I think, though maybe that's just me!

The spec of this RS sounds spot-on, and the performance phenomenal - should be a winner.

As an aside, on my way home this afternoon I was overtaken by an extremely angry-sounding R8 - God's trousers I want one of those.  Amazing what Audi can do when they put their minds to it... let's hope the TT RS delivers on its promise.

Great news that Audi have decided to reintroduce their wonderful, warbling 5 cylinder engine, but aren’t they  forgetting where it should go first? Surely it should be the S5, a car much closer in concept to the original bruiser of the 80’s than theTTRS?!  The current S5 has a lovely, creamy V8 but by common consensus it’s a little disappointing in its role – my own torque laden A5 3.0 tdi would have no trouble in keeping up with it on a typical country road - and one suspects Audi are planning to slot in the latest S4’s twin turbo V6 in the not too distant future.  No doubt this would be a cheaper solution, but I for one would feel short changed were I to be contemplating an S5. So....why not go for the 5 cylinder option and launch an S5 ‘5’? Those hankering after a V8 only have to wait for the RS 5 due out in a few months time. OK, it might be argued that an S5 ‘5’ would come too close to challenging an RS 5, but would it really? The gap between the 5 cylinder units 340 bhp and the RS 5’s 480 bhp sounds big enough to me. Afterall, the current S5 develops 345 bhp  and the new V6 would be pretty close at 328 bhp,  albeit with better performance than the old V8. But if it was a problem, a minor remap would send the RS 5’s output north of 500 bhp and leave little room for doubt.  So go on Audi....... I have my deposit ready!!!!

They're pandering to the US market where "step-off" performance rules OK, which is why they've supercharged (not turbo'd) the 6. 340 bhp/2.5 litres + 1 turbo = not much torque below 2000 rpm

Actually the TT RS reaches peak torque at 1,600 rpms and holds it right through to over 5,000 rpms which is one hell of a torque curve. I cant think of another car of with the same cc's which can equal this particular trick. In comparison  to another newly introduced 2.5 five in a line engineed car, the new Focus RS, it  achieves its peak torque far higher up the rev range and holds it for less rpms.

Lovely car but at that price i'd rather have a second hand RS4 or M3. The TT RS will be a great buy after early depreciation makes it more affordable.
