  • Chevrolet Camaro: no RHD

GM has ditched plans to offer a right-hand drive version of the Chevrolet Camaro in the UK when the car is launched in 2011.

Autocar has learned that Chevrolet has abandoned plans to build the new Chevrolet Camaro muscle car in right-hand drive, and will bring in significantly fewer models than initially thought.

Tooling for the right-hand-drive Chevrolet Camaro was already underway, but will now be cancelled in order to help preserve GM’s dwindling cash stocks.

GM gets it wrong AGAIN!! I've watched so many times GM trying to seriously launch cars in Europe and the UK....and again the RHD version gets ditched....most Cadillacs, the Opel Speedster and now this all should have been engineering for both LHD and RHD in the 1st place not as an after thought.

If GMC had any sense they'd let GME (including SAAB) go its own way as the main problems in this organisation come from the lack of foresight from the GMC chiefs!

Unfortunately, this was sort of inevitable.

That said, I am a fan of LHD cars in this country.  If you've got a Camaro, the you are going to feel pretty special anyway.  Adding the left hooker experience to the drive would only lend to its charm for me.

    It's all about the twisties....

I am This wa one good looking car I was really looking forward to seeing on british roads. Those VXR8 parts will make it great fun.

I've never tried a LHD car on UK roads, but could imagine it being a real pain in the arse!

Orangewheels - LHD in the UK isn't a problem except for car parks ticket barriers!  I've driven LHD American cars (2 Corvettes and the previous Camaro) over here for years and found it just fine.

GM is making a big mistake here, and also means the Camaro can't be sold in certain other markets such as Australia, where LHD is illegal.

Yet ironically, the Camaro is said to be based on a rear-drive platform developed by a ceratin other GM offshoot - Holden in Australia!

    What a cop out....

Damn shame. That's one of the best looking cars at any price. If it drove anywhere near as good as it looks, I'd be the first in the queue to buy one, but with no RHD....

Not to mention being unable to see when you want to overtake the vehicle in front, and other such trivial matters ;)

From the looks of things, overtaking is something you'd end up doing quite a lot in this monster...

Have you tried to overtake recently?

I get fed up with being flashed and nearly run off the road because people take exception to being overtaken, even if it is in a completely safe and justified fashion!

My 968 is LHD and it is certainly not a problem to drive in the UK.  You just have to think ahead slightly more than you do with a right hooker.  Ticket barriers are an issue though.

Overtaking in a 'wrong'-hd car is quite possible, in fact it forces a better technique. These clowns who get real close behind before taking a peek and then trying to deal with the decision/consequences are a menace. In GB for example, in an LHD car, you just sit back, get a good view ahead (you can often look along the inside of the vehicle in front as well) and select your place for passing and the correct gear before any action takes place. Actually passing the other vehicle is the least important part of the process, it's the planning that is critical and if you get that right, there is no drama. The net result is that you have a better view and are on the opposite side of the road for less time with a much smoother course in the process.

Evidently though, overtaking is now considered morally indefensible in GB, just a small step behind kiddy-fiddling, and the overtakee feels justified in any kind of action to prevent, hinder or punish the one overtaking. If they found out where you lived, they'd organise rent-a-mobs with badly-spelled placards too. The only viable solution I found to this was to leave the country. I can now overtake and be overtaken all day long if I choose with just the occassional British tourist to cause me problems.

As for the Camaro, it's all about costs, and for the volumes involved, it makes sense not to make RHD.

A radical way to deal with the problem, but I'm with you all the way!!

I'm a gnat's kneecap away from taking rhe same decision, though for numerous other reasons too!

Regarding LHD cars and overtaking, as mentioned, it's not a problem.  I've driven various LHD cars here (and the other way round in Russia) and if anything it creates a situation where you drive even safer, as you have to hang back and be sure of your move before you make it.   Kerbside parking is a breeze too.  Only downside as I see it is insurance can be higher.  (useful to have a partner with you when approaching car park barriers though LOL!)
