  • Hot Honda Accord diesel planned

    Feb 05, 2009 12:55 PM

Honda will unveil its first hot diesel, in the shape of the new Honda Accord Type S, at the Geneva motor show in March, the company has announced.

The Honda Accord Type S will use the same 2.2-litre diesel engine as the standard car, but tweaked to produce and extra 22lb ft of torque and 29bhp more.

The power gain is achieved through the use of a larger intercooler and changes to the turbocharger and cylinder head.

Customers will have the choice of saloon or estate bodies ...Read the full article

Seems rather an exercise in futility to me.

Looking at Hondas target demographic for the Accord doesn't suggest higher performance is what's required. Mainly older people less concerned about going faster.

Even the sports versions of the Accords have a very soft ride with plenty of roll in the corners to suit their customers, so why push more hardcore versions?

Would n't they be better off developing a lower powered version for the Civic to compete against the 1.6 Focus? I drive the current diesel in the CR-V and it seems fine and dandy as it is.

It's just for the company car crowd. The 148bhp unit does look a little underpowered compared to the 320d and 323d - Honda would love to steal some of their sales.

Completely agree on a diesel engine to challenge the 1.6 focus though.

at least they didn't name it a Type R.

there is still a hardcore following for the near 10 year old Accord Type R that is still pining for a return to form from Honda.  Evo crowned this car one of the best handling front wheelers ever.... slightly behind the Integra Type R and Civic Type R.  A combination of exciting handling, 4 doors and a decent boot is a god send and makes a nice change from the Octavia Vrs or the 3-series.

    Bring it!!

Fantastic car, but many argue that it wasn't a true Type R as it wasn't hard core enough.

You are completely correct though, Honda do need to have a flag ship for their Accord range (and preferably with one of their petrol engines) but to keep it in line with the rest of the Accord image the Type S monica is probably ideal.

    It's all about the twisties....

I have been buying Hondas for years since I was fairly young. I own the 2.2 ctdi Tourer and have driven the i-dtec which was excellent but I wouldnt mind some more power as long as the fuel economy didnt suffer too much.

Oh and my car rides well but not in a soft way nor is there plenty of roll in the corners ! The Accord is a very good car and an enjoyable drive.

And whilst some people may drive more slowly or be less interested in performance there are those that dont !
