  • Porsche readies hardcore Cayman

    Jan 23, 2009 10:03 PM

A lightweight Porsche Cayman Clubsport is being prepared by the German sports car company, Autocar has learned.

The stripped-out Porsche Cayman Clubsport goes on sale in the UK in October. It marks the first time that Porsche has offered a hardcore version of the Cayman, which is intended to meet demand for a version suitable for track days and competition.

Porsche is expected to use the car to establish a new one-make race series. Prices have yet to be confirmed, but a £4k premium...Read the full article

Autocar working rather late on a friday night or does Porsche normally embargo its press releases until 10pm?

The dedication to duty and your loyal readers is to be commended, but seriously - put the keyboard down and get to the pub! :)

No it just weighs less, it doesn't need more power.

    Well!

I hope that it will have a PSM which can be really disconnected.
As it should be on all normally established Porsche.

    And why not a 911 3.6 Clubsport??

I want one! But assuming that Porsche here will charge a premium on top of the $130,000 ((£60,000) Cayman S, I can't see this coming in at $150,000 (£70,000).

    Better start saving!

What fantastic news that Posche will now look to more fully realise the potential of one of the most competent sports cars on the road today. For all of those auto anoraks that enjoy most things Porsche, for their purity of design and sporting intent, this is a watershed moment. How significant will the changes be on the final product? And how will their marketing department respond to the incongruities in the brands product line, now that this might turn it into the 911-beater we always knew was there? Only time will tell. I for one can't wait to find out. Could this car be one of the first cars borne from the shifting sales figures produced by the recession? What was it about necessity being the mother of invention...

There's definite similarities in the timing of the launch of this model and the 968CS.

Back in the 90's there was a lack of sales for Porsche due to a recession.  To shift metal Porsche went back to basics and produced a cracking car.

That time though, they reduced the cost, unlike the 4k premium this time.

Despite that, I really, really fancy one of these.  I wonder if the OPC is open on a Sunday!

Like many people I would buy this but it would have to be cheaper than the standard car (which itself should really be priced at the same as the Boxster). If was cheaper than the standard car then it will be a great succes and allow Porsche to sell many more Caymans. A Porsche for the current times and it could become a legenary car like the 968CS.

Can't see why it should be cheaper than a normal Cayman and I don't believe that it isn't correctly priced to start off with. You aren't J Clarkson are you (?) sounds like you are a bit of a believer in his philosophy!

By the way, what was the last lightweight car that did not shave exactly 100kg off the standard car! Seems to me like tats the optimum number nowadays!

    Finally!

Don't you just love a recession?

I'll be watching this development with great interest.

I want one of these- you know it will be special...

Is this different to the previous generation Cayman Sport they launched for about the same price hike in Q4 2008?

Why no power hike?, they managed it for the previous generation Cayman Sport, make this into a Cayman GT3 give it around 350-360bhp weighing around 1300kg, now that would be a car...

On the flip side, 50k is a lot of money in this age for a Cayman, especially as 50k buys u a lot of metal in the current marketplace...
