    The Mercedes G-wagen, the rugged off-roader turned Hollywood celebrity favourite, has been in production for three decades, turning 30 next month.

    The original Mercedes G-wagen was launched in 1979 and came with a choice of four engines and five body styles. It remained unchanged until 1991, when it was replaced with an updated model that is still on sale.

    The original models were great off-road vehicles that would go virtually anywhere. but were fairly eyewateringly expensive for what was viewed as a utility vehicle.

    The American built replacments are just people-sized Tonka toys in comparison.

    The American built replacments are just people-sized Tonka toys in comparison

    - I'm sure you know this but the G-Class(original G-Wagen) continues to be built in Graz, Austria by MagnaSteyr, the once Steyr Daimler Puch, whereas the GL-Class  - once planned to replace the G-Wagen  - is made alongside the M-Class at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, US, in mass production.
