The new soft-top Fiat 500 has a simple roof mechanism to keep production costs low, as first revealed by our spy pics taken last September. As on its Fiat Topolino ancestor, the sardine-tin style folding roof rolls back to sit on top of the parcel shelf.

Cute.  I reckon this is a better way to go than the Mini or Audi A3 route, which with everything down tends to give the appearance of a rubbish skip.  The 500 retains the original profile, pays a lower weight penalty than conventional cabs (for a guess) and has been cheaper to develop and manufacture.  Well done Fiat.

Simple, cheap and funky roof.  Exactly what a 500 should be, brilliant.

Looks absolutely brilliant, Fiat are getting better and better. Can't wait for the estate version. Love the roof on this - it will surely be the must have car for the Summer!...

Wonder whether there will be an Abarth version?

A nice smiley car for the current climate (monetary not weather!)

I agree. It's not expensive, but it's brilliant. And it should be much more better with the roof closed than a conventional cabrio.
