  • Land Rover gets new Jag diesels

    Jan 05, 2009 2:42 PM

Jaguar’s new 3.0-litre diesel engine is destined to be used by the Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover Sport models.

The engine, set to power the new Jaguar XF S, is a development of the 2.7-litre AJV6 currently used in the Land Rover Discovery. The new 3.0-litre V6 diesel will be available in 272bhp and 237bhp outputs.

It is still not known whether the revised engine will replace or supplement the existing 2.7-litre powerplant, which gets a twin-turbo set-up on Jaguars but a sing...Read the full article

This hardly suprising news but the main problem LR have is the weight of the cars. The new enigne may be more efficient than the 2.7 but it will still struggle to return decent economy when tasked with lugging around 2.

So why can't the Disco have the more powerful engine ? Ludicrous.

Its not always quite as easy as that. I beleive that the Disco had the single turbo unit in the 2.7V6, as it provided a better torque range than compared to the twin turbo variant. Now that is really what matters when you have to haul nearly 3 tonnes of mass around.

"The discovery engine is tuned for torque and economy" - "One turbo reduces the cost of the unit" - "One turbo enhances oil flow allowing greater angles to be reached off-road".

I just made those up by the way. They'll make some excuse along the lines of those above, but really it's because they don't want the Discovery to steal the sales of the Range Rover.

While the new engine is good, (and badly needed in the Discovery) what Land Rovers need is some serious weight reduction and put the stop start system from the Freelander into the Discovery and Range Rover.

If Mazda can cut 100kg from their supermini's surely Land Rover can cut the same or more from their SUV's

Eh ? It's going in the RR Sport so why not the Disco ?

Maybe in the current climate they are hoping the Disco will just limp off to a ditch and quietly die somewhere, and perhaps it should?

No jokes about its prowess at getting out of ditches. Its become such a niche vehicle now.

I don't agree with that at all. It's the only car in the range that has 7 seats and it's a very practical family wagon. You're not a 4x4 hater are you ?

Certainly not, we have a 4x4 in the household fleet and I fancy one next change too. But I don't know many people that want to go offroad 7 up so for most people its just an MPV and there are plenty of 7 seaters that are much cheaper and lighter.

I know the old reasoning of the rare person that has 5 kids and needs to tow a horse box up a mountain and all that but really they are rare, its still mostly just a school bus.

I am not saying the Disco is wrong, not at all, just is it worth hard-up LR spending money fitting new engines, developing new models and so on for the 5 or 6 people that actually need to buy one, maybe from those peoples point of view -yes. .From a LR business sense point of view probably not. Sorry!

Never mind the Disco / RR Sport discussions, can these new engines be shoe-horned into a Defender?

Now that would be "entertaining"...  ;-)

I think your view of the number of people that buy them is well off the mark. These are very popular vehicles. Maybe not where you live but there are more than a few people that buy them for their people carrying abilities and their style. An MPV is still a heavy car and also brings with it that "I've-given-up-I'm-a-slave-to-my-children" image. No. I think you've got that wrong.
