‘Had we been able to award a sixth star, the Focus would probably have earned it’. That’s how strongly we felt about Ford’s landmark 1998 hatchback. But they weren’t all superstars: the saloon was gawky, the estate no looker either and the ST170 was a perpetual disappointment. Many would argue that the 2002 RS was the best of the bunch, but deep in our hearts everyone knows that one Focus stood above all others. No one ever needed more than the Focus TDCi five-door could offer.
