  • New BMW Z4 revealed

    Dec 13, 2008 11:11 PM

This is BMW’s new Z4, a completely reworked version of Munich’s two-seat sports car that the firm hopes will dramatically improve on the decidedly average fortunes of the outgoing model.

The new Z4 is due to go on sale next May, and BMW has sought to improve the car’s appeal in almost every area. Key differences include a lightweight metal folding hard-top, direct-injection straight six engines and a more spacious cabin.

this looks like it could be quite a good car, as the outgoing model was prettty good!!

BMW please stop this blody stupid naming convention you have started. Are you trying to clever or somehting as it comes across plain rediculous!!

Fussy, overstyled and could they have chosen a more unpleasant shade for the car in the photos?

looks ok, i'm sure it will drive reasonably well, but what is the real unique selling point?

it looks too similar to the old one - which didn't sell well.  it may have a hard folding roof, but so has the SLK.

in these times, i can't see this car being too popular either, nothing wrong with the car, but just no wow factor at all.

BMW need something along the lines of a stripped out racer to get the petrolheads going again.  A CSL version of the M3, or better yet, something similar to that 1 series concept which will recreate memories of the E30.

    Bring it!!

    Jeeeeeez.....

How ugly does a car need to be? That's going beyond the call of duty.

Another over-bodied under-wheeled BMW POS. 1/10 must try harder.

I normally hate BMW's ..... but I actually think this one looks pretty good, it has some elements of the 508 about it (certainly more than the Z8 had which truly was horrible, overpriced and pointless) ..... but I have to agree that metallic vomit is not a good shade of colour for a car launch and the naming structure is contrived and totally crap.

Yes, I would like a BMW Z4 WDrive i.3.7 Turbo Xrate Convertatop SE.

If you've been a bad person, like Jeffrey Archer, when you die and go to hell all cars will look like this there.

"The range starts with the 201bhp 2.5-litre model (now called the sDrive23i)"

Does this win some sort of prize for having the most ridiculous badging ever?

    Autocar:
The whole car measures 4239mm, just over 100mm longer than the outgoing model

Old car 4091mm in length(bmw.de), new car 4239mm, an extra 148mm, or almost six inches, somewhat more than 'just over 100mm'.

Could the new Z4 be 3rd time lucky for BMW as the Z3 and current Z4 have all been very average, and more or less beaten by every rival? The fact that the new Z4 is based on the same platform as the current model may suggest not. How come the new model is based on the 11-year old E46 3-Series platform, which worked well as a saloon but not as sports car, hence the average current car?
