  • Help design next Caterham

    Nov 05, 2008 12:30 PM

Caterham says its next new model will be designed online by the public using an innovative new website.

Users will be able to log on to www.splitwheel.com to submit ideas and concepts for a stable mate to the Seven.

The Surrey sports car maker will lend its own expertise and, once the specification is agreed, Caterham has committed to build a prototype of the car.

This will be a very interesting project.

I think my suggestions will be....

Slightly wider body than the current car (so I can fit my broad waist shoulders).

A high reving engine (aka Civic Type R), with a great exhaust note.

Better access to the cabin and weather protection.

Other than that, Caterham have got it pretty much spot on from my point of view.

    It's all about the twisties....

Surely they'll be looking for more radical ideas.  I mean, they already make the Seven and will hopefully continue to do so.  Personally, I'd like to see Caterham's take on something between the Aptera and an Isetta...

Totally agree; my initial thought was for a two-wheeled Caterham. It's not unheard of for manufacturers to crossover and build cars & bikes and a Caterham bike project would be be an interesting salvo to fire across KTM's bow don't you think?

I normally agree with most of what you say Teg, but we have a series 1 and 2 Elise situation here.  Part of the original design philosophy was to make getting in and out a bit of a challenge and effectively rule out some potential customers who really ought to be looking elsewhere.  In that respect the series 2 is a slight letdown.

In any case Caterham already do a wide(ish) body version I think.  Agree about the Type R engine though, if it fits within the existing bonnet height.
