  • Motorists face £20 fines

    Sep 18, 2008 5:40 PM

Leave your engine running when your car’s stationary and you could be in for a nasty surprise. West Sussex County Council is working on a scheme that will give traffic wardens the power to fine drivers who leave their car engines running at level crossings.

The council has been keen to emphasise that the proposal is in an exploratory phase. “This is just an investigation at this stage, ” said a council spokesman, going on to say that the “the fixed penalty would probably be £20.”

I hope nobody minds me saying this about another unfair charge levied at motorists but I can't help it. Bastards.

    Motorists face £20 fines

Quite right too. Loads more new fines should be dreamt up to inflict on the motorists. They are just not being fined enough, dammit.

What about in the winter months when it is freezing?

I can see this being the thin end of the wedge. We need a government that will curb this trend towards giving more and more organisations the powers to levy fines, not just on motorists, but in general. I find it very disturbing that people like traffic wardens and other minor functionaries, not always the brightest and most astute of our public servants, can impose such subjective and unprovable penalties on the rest of us. I expect that in many cases such as this proposal, the first the victim will hear of the offence will be the penalty notice landing on the doormat a few weeks after the supposed event; how do you defend yourself against such an accusation if made to make up the target quotas imposed on the operatives ? County council staff should be concentrating on getting essential services working properly, ie education, social services, waste disposal, transport infrastructure, libraries etc etc, not just dreaming up more and more ludicrous ways of raising revenue.

    Ahhhh.. easy!

You can buy plug in electric heaters, which will keep you warm.  Mind you with the constant restarting of the engine and the drain by the heater, I am sure that will bugger the battery quickly.

New batteries = more polution, but at least the polution won't be in their back yard!

    Ohhh, so cynical!

    It's all about the twisties....

Another moronic idea from a local council.  Nothing better to do than think up ways of fleecing their own residents, and don't forget these are the same councils that throw away loads of our money on pointless traffic-calming schemes.

The world has definitely gone mad!

Eh? Why so? Many modern cars are being equipped with stop-start systems. You don't have to be stopped very long at all to use less fuel overall.

I agree with the principle, but fining people isn't going to help anyone, it's just going to turn people against the idea. More carrot and less stick, please.

But there are alot of cars not equipped with stop-start.  Mine for example a Mk3 fiesta.  If i turn off my engine to save petrol, it needs to be off for a decent period otherwise i use more petrol turning the ignition thus more emissions.

If the council want to pay for me to have a new car that will benefit the environment and mot make me subject to these ludicrous fines then i will accept willingly.  A BMW 118d in black will suffice.  They can find me at a level crossing with my engine running.

Do you have any proof of this?
