  • Audi TT 2.0 TDI Quattro

    Aug 21, 2008 7:13 PM

Audi has plenty of form when it comes to high-performance diesels; it is already working on a V12 turbodiesel version of the R8 supercar and has three diesel-powered Le Mans victories under its belt courtesy of the R10 TDI.

Audi was one of the first mainstream manufacturers to bring a turbodiesel-powered cabriolet to market with the soft-top A4 back in 2004. The TT TDI is, however, the most overtly sporting diesel road car to come out of Ingolstadt.

Does the TD stand for TarDis??? The test claims that the TT has a luggage capacity of 1700 litres with the rear seats down. That is more than a Mondeo estate! I prefer the looks of my 407 Coupe. The TT still looks like it was a nice design forced onto a too short (Golf) wheelbase. I also enjoy the ability to carry 4 adults in comfort and get over 40 mpg when cruising. The build quality is excellent with no issues at all in the first 20,000 miles. Very happy.

I took delivery of my diesel tt at the middle of July, and completely chuffed!  Prior to the TT had a 54 reg A4 tdi with sports suspension.  The ride (with optional magnetics) is superb, with sport selected is certainly good enough for me (average bloke), and with it switched off is far more comfortable then my old A4.

Test drove a couple of other cars prior to choosing TT, including a BMW 123d coupe.  I am aware of the dealership friendly rivalry between Audi & BMW, but the BMW was an excellent car too.  The 123d was quicker and handled better, however I stopped riding motorbikes because it was so easy to drive so fast without realising!  The 123d isn't quite like a bike but I found it very easy to hit 3 figures, and it felt nothing like the ton.  The handling was faultless too.  Inside the TT's quality is superior.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I don't know anyone that considers the 123d better looking.

I decided at the end of the day that which would be the most comfortable for 20k a year, which looks the better.  If I was younger and wanted to blast everywhere the BMW would have won, perhaps.

Ummm a TTS or my 407 I'll pass!!! I already have a car with no back seat and a tiny boot - its a 1967 Triumph TR4A. As I said earlier, I wanted a coupe with the ability to comfortably carry 4 people and their luggage when necessary. I looked at the Audi but it really is a small car. My 2.7 V6 has averaged 35 mpg for 20,000 miles of mixed driving and has a marvelous relaxed cruising gait with plenty of power when fully laden. The other problem is that Audi, like Mercedes and BMW, charges extra for basics like heated seats and directional bi-xenons. The German manufacturers have made an art form of this so that they can claim low depreciation rates, which are calculated on the basic list price of the car. If you have ever tried to buy a German car in basic spec, as I have, you will know that they do not exist. At least with the Peugeot, I have all the extras without being gouged.

did anyone else notice how in this weeks group test of the "diesel hatchbacks" in the mag, the BMW used throughout for the photographs, including group ones, was the autocar long-term 135i - you can clearly see the badging and the 'plates are the same. I was dissapointed.
