Autocar - First for car news and reviews

As Chevrolet releases these new teaser images of its 2010 Volt electric family car, Autocar has learned that parent company General Motors is deep in talks with the UK Government over plans to build European versions of the Volt in Britain.

The underused Vauxhall plant at Ellesmere Port on Merseyside is believed to be the front-running European factory for Volt production. The plant currently produces the Astra, but volumes were scaled back last year.

Since the British press, which is one of the most influential of them all, falls in love with anything made in the UK (like the "British" Vauxhall), I think what GM does here would be a brilliant gimmick.

I think it would be fantastic for the Volt to be made at Ellesmere Port. It would inject some more life into the plant, which I personally think is a hive of activity. I know tons of people who work at the plant, and adding a potentially ground-breaking car would surely fire up more support from the Government, as well as huge demand. I hope they stick to their plans!

This could be the answer to putting the UK back to the front of automotive technology, GM gimmic or not.

It's the potential spin offs that should be that we should also be excited about.... component suppliers, other manufacturers and the thrust forward in technology. 

Lets hope the government let it / help it happen.
