  • Goodbye Silverstone, hello Donnington

    Jul 05, 2008 11:41 AM

From 2010 the British GP will be hosted at Donnington. Donnington are going to spend £100 million bringing their circuit up to modern day F1 standards. I think it is quite exciting as (once again) Silverstone are talking about doing the same. Either way, we could have two very modern circuits which should also benefit other UK motoring events outside of F1. I just hope Donnington do not charge stratospheric gate prices.

I can't see how the prices won't be out of reach, the only revenue the circuits get is the ticket money and they have to pay £10million (+5% year on year) to stage it.

All the advertising at the trackside and other revenues goes to Bernie.....

Lets hope they sort out the infastructure, so that we can get in and out.

But, in the end we have GP, and must be thankful of that

    It'll never happen.

MotoGP weekend a few weeks ago and it get's snarled up now with 80,000 folks on bikes and in cars - just imagine the GP weekend with one road in and one road out & 250,000 Lewis Hamilton sychophants in Mondeo's? It struggled to cope with the Download festival a week before that.

I'd sooner eat my own poo (or yours - I'm not fussy) than attend such a thing.

Can't see it myself.  If it needs a £100m investment to improve Donington, surely they'll never see a return on it?  The F1 can't be that profitable can it?  If it is, then Bernie isn't charging enough for the event and I'd be amazed if that was the case.  Wouldn't be surprised if come 2010, Donington hasn't done enough for it and we've either lost a British GP or it's back at Silverstone

I've just sent some of mine up in an envelope. Might be a bit dry by the time it gets there. Should really have used a freezer bag. Enjoy anyway.

Thanks James - the powdery white texture of maturing excrement always thrills me.

I used to live very close to Donnington Park, as you come off the motorway and go past the Hotel and Airport entrance on the top of the hill overlooking Diseworth are some houses.

The traffic will be an issue, but it's the same most places in the UK. In Germany planning permission is not granted if the developer cannot prove that they have reasonably considered the infrastructure of how to get in and out with the minimum delay. With the amount of land they own and the airport in close proximity Donnington should be able to put on a good show.

     Good luck to them.

Once again Jon, amidst a wave of needless, bitchy negativity, you post a reply that is considered & reasonable.

I'm sure that Donnington's owners would spend £100m+ if they didn't think they'd see a return on the investment. Of course that's the way you run any business. ??!!!! For pete's sake (whoever he is). Can we try not to imagine that everything any one ever does is sh1t please? Even if it didn't directly make a return from F1 tickets, it would put the track seriously back on the map in a way that it hasn't been for some time.

As for the traffic- I went to the Renault GP at Donnington a couple of years ago and had to queue from the motorway, 3 miles back from the exit. It took hours to get to the car park. Hey ho. If you attract that quantity of people to a single day event, from around the country, there will be traffic issues. It doesn't matter where you put the event- Silverstone, Donnington or some remote airstrip in the west-country. What are you moaning about?

do or do not. there is no try.

Thank you Kerrecoe, your comments are appreciated, and I agree with your views totally.

Even with those laws mentioned above regarding Germany, you still get queues.
