  • Royal Aston to run on wine

    Jul 02, 2008 11:42 AM

Prince Charles has converted his vintage Aston Martin DB6 to run on bioethanol distilled from surplus British wine.
Eco-friendly Charles was given the Aston by the Queen on his 21st birthday. It only clocks up 300 miles per year and averages ten miles a gallon - that’s roughly five bottles of wine per mile.
The biofuel costs £1.10 a litre, but its net output of CO2 is considerably less than normal petrol as the gas is absorbed during the growing process of the vines.

Obviously the car, like its royal owner, likes a drink or two.  Hope the bioethanol was distilled from burgundy to match the color of the car.  A genuinely superb and well-preserved example it is too - I am referring to the Aston.

Nice story but please get your maths right. Its more like 2/3 bottles per mile.

If an average bottle is .75L then that makes 6.6 bottles per gallon (gallon = 4.55L) so 10 miles per 6.6 bottle equals about 2/3 bottle per mile.

However if you assume that a bottle of wine is 9 units and he does 300 miles a year then the aston consumes about the recommended number of alchohol units per week (28 units) :-)

Sorry to disappoint but the photograph was not of the Prince's car. His is a blue soft top. Err, don't know which grape variety would produce blue wine.

Maybe he could run it on 'the blue nun'?

I think that all 3 of us need to discuss this over a bottle or Cabernet Sauvignon!
