  • Bernie threatens Silverstone

    Jun 21, 2008 4:05 PM

Formula One supreme Bernie Ecclestone has ramped up the pressure on Silverstone to do a long-term deal on the British Grand Prix by threatening to take the race to Donington Park instead.
Silverstone’s owner, the British Racing Drivers’ Club, has a deal with Ecclestone to hold the race at the Northamptonshire circuit until 2009. But F1’s commercial boss and the club have become stuck in negotiations about the price of the race and required improvements to the track’s facilities.

Again, how annoying is that man..

OK, Silverstone needs investment, it's accepted, plans are in place, and this is without Government backing such as other countries have.

What a way to do business, just constantly threatening. OK, he's in a powerful negotiating position, but all these politics and threats are just tiresome.

Bernie, have you not made enough money yet? Just retire and let someone a little more professional take over.

I don't like Bernie or his approach to life but:

The thing with Silverstone is that it's the threats that got the bypass in place and the new facilities currently being built on the site. No threats, no investment - and you and I would carry on being charged stupid prices for admission just for a tractor to tow you out of a field like they had to in 2000 or queue for hours just to get near the M1 after the race.

Silverstone is a sh*t tip compared to many of the new circuits and the level of investment by sponsors and manufacturers cannot be sustained when you offer facilities like Silverstone. Yes it's better right now but it could be an awful lot better - anyone who has been there will testify to that. £100 plus just to bring your own deck chair to sit on a bank with jack all view...!! Outragous.

The circuit itself is one of the few left that an F1 car is worthy of - let's see a facility to match. Don't blame Bernie - blame the BRDC and their stupid decisions by commitee approach to everything.

Keep Tilke away from the track at Donington, remember it hosts the British MotoGP, he would just ruin it with another identikit track. The problem with both Silverstone and Donington are the lack of modern facilities - just look at them compared with other tracks. Not one decent covered grandstand between either of them. Remember this is Britain, were it rains!

I agree Andy, though Credit where it is due, he did get Turkey right...though I guess we all are due a fluke once in a while!
