Autocar - First for car news and reviews

The European Union is planning new rules that would see all car ads clearly displaying the vehicle’s environmental credentials.
In the same way that some food packets now have coloured labels to show what the ingredients are, car advertisements would be obliged to display warnings to show the respective vehicle’s CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Couldn't disagree more guys - I think this is an excellent idea.  Making more people conscious of their potential car's impact on the environment has to be a good thing.

If it stops even one more numpty a week going out to buy an oversized piece of four-wheel-drive, gas-guzzling mobile roadblock, the rest of us will be a heap better off.

Oh Original Shoe, watch out, this sort of view really gets James Read's back up, I know I've been their. Suffice to say I totally agree with you.

Watched a program on Discovery the other day where they pitted a car from the UK against one from America (Land Rover LR3 v Jeep Cherokee) in the wilds of Canada. Exactly wher they should all be!!!!!

 

Total waste of money to set up a system showing a car's "health". I would think that every car owner is now so acutely aware of how "healthy" their car is because they will know which car tax band they fall into and how much is being screwed out of them. I am NOT saying that I agree with CO2 being linked to climate warming but the government does and we don't need yet another expensive system to pay for.

Not very constructive, however I do agree.

How many times has anyone in this forum just bought a car on a whim? Answer, no-one.

Before people here fork out how ever many thousands of pounds for a new car I would think they sit down and work out how affordable it is first... Only green tree hugging hippies worry about the impact of the environment their car has! Anyway, my point is, people do a hell of a lot of research into buying a new car, it's often said it's the 2nd most important purchase anyone will ever make and the 1st most important being a house, obviously!

I don't think people go into buying things blindly, they know how much it will cost them to run, they know how much tax they have to pay and they know how much fuel a vehicle will consume, hence the mpg figures on every car brochure you can find!... I don't think this new legislation will change anything, except maybe raise tax some more to finance the scheme!

Jon - we never really did get to the bottom of your resentful attitude towards 4x4 drivers. In the Range Rover thread, you said that you don't object to them on environmental grounds but you think they're overengineered (which is a good thing) and a bit big. As I said before, given that neither of those qualities affect you in any way, mind your own business ! You also lump all SUVs in together, meaning that a RAV4 gets the same treatment from you as a Hummer, totally forgetting S class Mercedes, trucks, buses and so on. A really unthoughtful, incoherent approach that, yes, gets my back up !

Luke - it appears my comments are not constructive because I have written many times about this subject before as Jon has pointed out. Jon was one of the people that I particularly probed (sorry Jon) because when you actually probe most 4x4 haters their argument is basically rehashed media garbage and not well thought through. Some even go so far as to hate the drivers of 4x4s because they think they're showing off ! Really good to totally judge someone by what car they choose !
