  • Volkswagen unveils racy Scirocco

    May 25, 2008 8:56 PM

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its Scirocco GT24 concept car at the Worthersee festival in Austria. Billed as the “road-going sister car” to the factory-prepared Scirocco 24-hour racer, the GT24 features a race-prepped 2.0-litre TSI that churns out 296bhp. Torque is sent to the front wheels via six-speed DSG gearbox and features revised ratios.

    Autocar:
The GT24 is larger in every dimension compared to the recently launched Scirocco production car. Length and width have increased to accommodate the wider track, while adjustable dampers drop the ride height by 75mm.

Doesn't lowering the ride height make that particular dimension smaller?!

While we can all disagree about whether the new Scirocco looks the business or not, but when it comes to delivering on the road - or rather the track - it clearly does the business. Three specially designed VW Scirocco GT24s competed the Nurburgring 24-hour race coming 11th, 15th and 32nd overall. It came 1st and 2nd in its class. Just to put this stunning achievement in perspective, the Scirocco race car was developed in just 75 days. It uses a standard 2.0-litre engine tuned to 325 bhp and mated with a 6-speed DSG box. It beat every single Aston-Martin, every single BMW M3 E90 and the Lexus LF-A supercar. We should be in no doubt that when it arrives in the UK, this car will be very well received. And unlike the Audi TT when it was launched, the new Scirocco doesn't need a rear spoiler to ensure it stays glued to the road.

Well that's weird because in Autocars article it says they use a race-prepped 2.0TSI unit which develops 296bhp?

Bah, I'm just splitting hairs... Anyway, it does look and sound like an exciting new performance car, I wonder how much one of these things will cost though? Not to mention cost per mile... Mind you I don't think many people will be using this as a daily driver.
