    In detail: New Audi V6

    May 09, 2008 10:04 PM

Audi has revealed more details about its forthcoming supercharged V6 engine, which will power the next S4 and feature in next year’s A6 refresh.
The 3.0-litre, direct-injection unit produces 286bhp at 4850rpm, and 310lb ft torque at 2500rpm. It’ll be known as the 3.0-litre TFSI, even though the ‘T’ traditionally stands for ‘turbo’.
The new engine uses an Eaton supercharger and has an air-to-air intercooler rather than a water-to-air unit.

With the current focus on emissions and economy, it seems strange that Audi have chosen a supercharged engine, even more so a positive-displacement supercharger.

That said, if the boost level is low, the efficiency of the supercharger is much better and the undramatic headline power figure suggests this may be the case.

Due to the increasing weight of cars Audi's engineers decided to use a supercharger to boost low rev torque. Here's an idea, how about they try building lighter cars? I'm pretty much sure that would be better for economy, emissions etc...

I'm excited about an engine from Audi to compete with the 3.0 liter turbo-charged engine in the 335i and 135i. A little chip from APR and you have yourself a very powerful option from Audi.

This engine should make its way in the VW R32!

How is boost limited on a mechanically supercharged engine? On a turbo it's easy to up the boost as it's controlled by the wastegate, you might have to change the 'charger pulley to up the boost on this.
