  • Mystery GM car on test in Sweden

    Apr 25, 2008 10:30 PM

This is a mystery GM prototype snapped wearing Swedish registration plates – but although it’s a similar size to next year’s long-awaited replacement for the Saab 9-5, we believe that it’s a new Holden lurking under the disguise.
According to registration details this car is a Holden, and the shape of the grille opening and the large circular badge clearly visible under the front disguise seem to back that up – it’s possible that this is a close-to-production prototype of Holden’s version of ...Read the full article

That is obviously a Caddy. You can even see the logo behind the grey grill cover. The shapes all over the car look like a biger CTS.

I know, American cars suck. I am sorry. Now stop complaining.

I would say neither of the above, and surprised that it hasn't been suggested by others.  It is clearly the production version of the Buick Invicta.  Refer images of the 'concept' from the Beijing motor show.  You can see the large Buick insignia in the circle on front, and the 'waterfall' grille can also be seen behind the disguise.  The scalloping and glasshouse is also clearly related to the concept.  The side profile has the same type massing also - fairly heavy and bulky - despite the relatively large wheels, they seem dwarfed.  The cladding on the side of the car will be hiding the asymmetric character line (just visible on the rear door), of the side profile.

It definitely isn't a Holden - the front overhang is way too long, indicating FWD and the graphics / massing / surfacing are all inconsistent - doesn't relate the the existing Holden VE range, and all the concepts that have been wheeled out in the recent past (Torana, Coupe / Monaro and the GMC Denali concept from the NY Auto show, designed in Australia).

This is clearly not a Holden Commodore of any description because the front wheels are hard up against the front door shut lines (indicating fwd) whereas the Commodore front wheels are further forward allowing for the placement of a horizontal vent between the wheel arch and the front door shut line. Holden stopped selling their version of the Vectra a while ago (it was never a big seller in Australia) and replaced it with the Korean Chevrolet Epica (badged as a Holden) and as you've pointed out this cars dimensions are so close to a Commodores that whatever it is, it's unlikely to be any sort of Holden

Hats off to rognbrow....I googled the Buick Invicta concept and I think you are dead right. The shaping of the lower doors is near identical to the concept. The trouble with this Epsilon 2 programme is that there are so many models involved, I just lost track... HH
